Udaipur, the "City of Lakes," is India's most romantic destination and is often referred to as the "Venice of the East." Miniature painting is Udaipur's most famous art form — in tiny studios, artists paint intricate scenes from Indian mythology with brushes made from a single hair. Silver jewelry, hand-printed textiles, and marble sculptures are other specialties. The Jagdish Temple steps, rooftop cafés with lake views, and the nightly cultural shows featuring Rajasthani dance and music make Udaipur a place where one easily stays longer than planned. The city is also the perfect springboard for excursions to Kumbhalgarh Fort with its 36-kilometer-long wall and to the Jain temples of Ranakpur.
