About Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is the largest religious temple complex in the world and a masterpiece of Khmer architecture that has awed visitors since its construction in the 12th century. The temple was dedicated by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu sanctuary to the god Vishnu and later transformed into a Buddhist site — this dual identity makes it unique. The five lotus-shaped towers, reflecting in the water moat, create one of the most iconic silhouettes in architectural history. Over 1,200 meters of bas-reliefs tell stories from Hindu mythology and the Khmer Empire in masterful detail. The sunrise over Angkor Wat, when the towers appear as black silhouettes against an orange sky, is one of the most magical moments in Southeast Asia. However, Angkor Wat is just a part of the vast Angkor Archaeological Park, which contains over 1,000 temples spread over 400 square kilometers. Ta Prohm, where powerful roots of strangler figs entwine the temple ruins, became famous as a filming location for Tomb Raider. Bayon impresses with its 216 smiling stone faces. Three days is the minimum to explore the most important temples. November to February offers cool, dry weather and is the best time to visit.

4 travel tips for Angkor Wat

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Buy the 3-day pass – one day is not enough, and on the second day you can discover the lesser-known, often more beautiful temples.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat is crowded – the sunset from Pre Rup or Phnom Bakheng is just as beautiful with fewer people.

A tuk-tuk driver for the whole day costs from $15 – better than organized tours and more flexible.

Visit Ta Prohm in the afternoon (3–5 PM) when the bus groups are gone – then you have the ruins almost to yourself.

Food & drink in Angkor Wat

These specialties you must try!

Amok — Cambodia's national dish: fish in a creamy coconut curry paste, steamed in banana leaves – mild and aromatic.
Lok Lak — Stir-fried beef cubes with lime-pepper dip on a bed of salad – simple but perfectly balanced.
Nom Banh Chok — Khmer noodle soup with fish curry sauce and fresh herbs – Cambodia's most popular breakfast.
Fried Spider — Fried tarantula – yes, really! A popular (and actually tasty) snack for the brave in Siem Reap.
Fresh Coconut — Fresh coconut with a straw – the perfect thirst quencher while temple visiting in the heat.
