About Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands are Malaysia's cool oasis in the clouds — a highland at an altitude of 1,500 meters, discovered by British colonizers in the 1930s as a refuge from the tropical heat of the lowlands. Named after the surveyor William Cameron, who mapped the plateau in 1885, the Highlands feature brightly green tea plantations, misty moss forests, and a refrigerator-like temperature that feels like a small miracle in tropical Malaysia. The BOH Tea Plantation is the largest tea plantation in Southeast Asia and the heart of the Cameron Highlands: endless rows of tea bushes cover the hills in a vibrant green that shifts between emerald and jade depending on the time of day and light. The tea house at the Sungei Palas Plantation sits atop a hill with a 360-degree panoramic view, and the freshly brewed Cameron Gold Tea here is the best tea in Malaysia. The Mossy Forest on Gunung Brinchang (2,031 m) is a misty forest that could come straight out of a fantasy film: ancient trees, completely covered in moss, ferns, and orchids, surrounded by an eternal fog that muffles sounds and creates an unreal silence. A wooden walkway leads through this forest, where endemic Pitcher Plants trap insects in their cup-shaped traps. The night market in Brinchang is an experience for all the senses: fresh strawberries (the Highlands are Malaysia's only strawberry region), steaming steamboat pots, grilled corn, jackfruit, and local specialties are sold under colorful neon lights. The strawberry farms offer self-picking — an unexpected pleasure in the tropics. The Orang Asli tribe of the Semai has lived in the forests of the Highlands for centuries: guided jungle hikes with Semai guides showcase traditional hunting techniques with blowpipes, edible plants, and a connection to nature that has become rare in the modern world.
