About Podgorica

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is often overlooked — most visitors head straight to the coast or Kotor. However, the city at the confluence of the Moraca and Ribnica has its own charm: a mix of Ottoman remnants, Austrian architecture, and Yugoslav brutalism, interspersed with surprisingly much greenery. The Old Turkish Bridge (Stari Most) over the Ribnica and the Ottoman old town (Stara Varos) with its clock tower tell of 500 years of Turkish rule. The Millennium Bridge, a modern cable-stayed bridge over the Moraca, symbolizes the new Montenegro. Podgorica's surroundings are spectacular: The Moraca Canyon (30 min north) offers wild rafting adventures, Lake Skadar (15 min south) is the largest lake in the Balkans with pelicans and monastery islands, and the medieval Cetinje (former capital) is 30 minutes in the mountains. The gastronomy surprises: Montenegrin wine (Vranac grape), Njeguski Prsut (cured ham from Njeguski), fresh fish from Lake Skadar, and the café culture along the Bulevar make Podgorica a culinary introduction to the Balkans.
