Bay of Kotor

The Bay of Kotor is Europe's southernmost fjord — although not a true fjord geologically, but a submerged river valley, it looks just like one: Steep mountains rising up to 1,700 meters plunge into a deep blue, winding body of water, where medieval towns and tiny fishing villages cling to the shores. This dramatic interplay of mountains and sea makes Boka Kotorska one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Mediterranean. Kotor itself, located at the innermost corner of the bay, is a medieval gem: The completely preserved city walls wind up 4.5 kilometers along the steep mountainside to the San Giovanni Fortress at 1,200 meters. The ascent of 1,350 steps is strenuous, but the reward is one of the greatest panoramic views in Europe — the entire bay lies at your feet, cruise ships look like toys, and on clear days, the view extends to the open Adriatic. The old town of Kotor is a Venetian jewel: Narrow alleys between stone palaces open onto secluded squares with Romanesque churches and bubbling fountains. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon from the 12th century houses golden reliquaries, and the Maritime Museum tells of the seafaring tradition of the bay, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Beyond Kotor, the villages along the bay invite exploration: Perast, a sleepy Baroque village with only a few hundred inhabitants, overlooks two tiny islands — the artificially created Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) with a votive church full of sailor's gifts, and the Benedictine island Sveti Đorđe with its cypress silhouette. Herceg Novi at the entrance to the bay delights with lush gardens, fortresses, and a lively promenade, while the Luštica Peninsula on the opposite side offers hidden coves and olive groves.

Cities

Budva

Budva is the vibrant heart of the Montenegrin Adriatic coast, combining a picturesque old town with lively beaches and an exciting nightlife. The old town, surrounded by powerful city walls, juts out on a small peninsula into the turquoise sea and features winding alleys, churches, and cozy restaurants. The beaches Mogren and Jaz are among the most beautiful along the entire Adriatic coast, attracting sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts alike. In the summer months, Budva transforms into a party metropolis, drawing young travelers from all over Europe with its clubs, bars, and open-air events.

Kotor

Kotor is located at the end of a dramatic fjord on the Montenegrin Adriatic coast and is one of Europe's best-kept secrets. The medieval old town, surrounded by Venetian walls and dominated by a fortress on a 1,200-meter-high mountain, offers a backdrop reminiscent of a movie set — only here everything is real and still largely undiscovered. The Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is often referred to as the "southernmost fjord in Europe" and is indeed one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the Mediterranean. Steep, green mountains drop directly into the deep blue water, small baroque towns and churches line the shores, and the silence is only interrupted by the lapping of waves and the ringing of church bells. The ascent to the San Giovanni Fortress over 1,350 steps is a must-do in Kotor. The path leads steeply uphill along the medieval city wall, past the Church of Our Lady of Health, to the ruins of the Venetian fortress. The view from the top — of the old town, the bay, and the surrounding mountains — is one of the most magnificent in the entire Mediterranean. The old town itself is a labyrinth of narrow streets, Romanesque churches, and Venetian palaces. The 12th-century Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the Piazza of Arms, and the countless small squares with cafés and restaurants have a charm reminiscent of Dubrovnik — but without the crowds and at a fraction of the prices. Perast, a tiny baroque town on the other side of the bay, is another gem. From here, a boat goes to the artificial island Our Lady of the Rocks, a small church on an island built up by sailors over centuries — one of the most romantic stories of the Adriatic.

Podgorica

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is often overlooked — most visitors head straight to the coast or Kotor. However, the city at the confluence of the Moraca and Ribnica has its own charm: a mix of Ottoman remnants, Austrian architecture, and Yugoslav brutalism, interspersed with surprisingly much greenery. The Old Turkish Bridge (Stari Most) over the Ribnica and the Ottoman old town (Stara Varos) with its clock tower tell of 500 years of Turkish rule. The Millennium Bridge, a modern cable-stayed bridge over the Moraca, symbolizes the new Montenegro. Podgorica's surroundings are spectacular: The Moraca Canyon (30 min north) offers wild rafting adventures, Lake Skadar (15 min south) is the largest lake in the Balkans with pelicans and monastery islands, and the medieval Cetinje (former capital) is 30 minutes in the mountains. The gastronomy surprises: Montenegrin wine (Vranac grape), Njeguski Prsut (cured ham from Njeguski), fresh fish from Lake Skadar, and the café culture along the Bulevar make Podgorica a culinary introduction to the Balkans.

Tivat

Tivat has transformed from a sleepy Montenegrin coastal town into a glamorous yacht destination — thanks to Porto Montenegro, a luxurious marina and residential complex that emerged from a former naval base. The marina is one of the most modern in the Mediterranean and attracts superyachts from around the world. Despite the glamour, Tivat has retained its authentic side: The old town with its stone houses, the Palm Beach promenade, and the nearby Flower Island (Ostrvo Cvijeća) offer a relaxed Montenegrin atmosphere. The city park with subtropical vegetation and the nearby beaches of Plavi Horizonti (one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Montenegro) make Tivat the perfect mix of luxury and nature. The Bay of Kotor, one of the most spectacular fjord-like waters in Europe, is right at the doorstep. Kotor, Perast, and the island of Gospa od Škrpjela are easily reachable for day trips. Tivat Airport is directly connected to many European cities and is only 3 km from the center — one of the shortest airport transfers ever.

Montenegro

Montenegro is the most exciting discovery on the European Adriatic coast – a country that combines an almost unreal variety of landscapes in a small space. From the dramatic Bay of Kotor, often referred to as the southernmost fjord in Europe, to the glamorous beaches of Budva and the wild gorges of Durmitor National Park: Montenegro packs nature, culture, and beach enjoyment into a country that is barely larger than Schleswig-Holstein. Kotor is the heart and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The perfectly preserved old town with Venetian palaces, churches, and winding alleys lies at the end of a fjord-like bay, surrounded by steep mountains. The 1,350 steps to the San Giovanni Fortress reward visitors with a breathtaking panorama. Across the bay lies Perast with its Baroque palaces and the picturesque church island of Gospa od Škrpjela. Budva entices with the most beautiful old town on the Montenegrin coast, surrounded by sandy beaches. A few kilometers away stands Sveti Stefan – a medieval fishing village on a rocky island that has been transformed into the most exclusive luxury resort in the Balkans. In the hinterland, the Lovćen National Park awaits with the mausoleum of Njegoš at an altitude of 1,660 meters, offering one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the entire Mediterranean region. German tourists reach Montenegro via the airports of Podgorica or Tivat, the latter being only 10 minutes from Kotor. The flight time is about two hours. Montenegro is still significantly cheaper than Croatia, yet offers comparable coastal beauty. The best travel time is from May to October, with high summer in the Bay of Kotor being very hot and crowded. The off-season in May, June, and September provides the best experience with pleasant temperatures.
