Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is a baroque masterpiece of world significance. Hellbrunn Palace, with its surprising water features, has been a delightful excursion destination for 400 years. The Salzburg Festival, founded in 1920 by Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Richard Strauss, is the world's most significant festival for opera, drama, and concert. For six weeks in summer, the entire city transforms into a stage — the 'Jedermann' in the Cathedral Square is one of the most iconic theater performances in the world. Culinary delights include the Salzburger Nockerln, Mozartkugeln, and the Stiftsbäckerei St. Peter (since 803, the oldest bakery in Europe). The surrounding area with lakes and mountains makes Salzburg the perfect starting point for excursions into the Salzkammergut.
