About Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is the quiet, untouched brother of Lake Bled and for many connoisseurs, the even more beautiful natural jewel of Slovenia. While Bled attracts tourists with its church island, Bohinj, as the largest natural lake in the country, lies in the midst of the Triglav National Park in almost untouched wilderness. The crystal-clear, emerald-green water reflects the rugged peaks of the Julian Alps, and the shores exude a tranquility that is rarely found in the Alps anymore. The Triglav National Park, which surrounds the entire Lake Bohinj, is Slovenia's only national park and a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers. The namesake Triglav, with its 2,864 meters, is the highest mountain in Slovenia and a national symbol – its peak even adorns the national flag. Numerous hiking trails lead from Bohinj into the alpine world: from the leisurely lakeside path to the challenging ascent of Triglav through the Valley of the Seven Lakes. On the western shore of the lake, the Savica waterfall plunges 78 meters down and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia. The 553 steps through the forest up to the waterfall make for a rewarding half-day trip. At the opposite end, a cable car connects the lake with the Vogel ski area at an altitude of 1,535 meters, from where an overwhelming panorama of the lake and the entire mountain range opens up. Bohinj is perfect for travelers seeking nature instead of hustle and bustle. In summer, you can swim in the clear lake, go stand-up paddling, or canoeing; in autumn, the foliage ignites in all shades of red, and in winter, Vogel transforms into a charming ski resort. The small village of Ribcev Laz on the eastern shore offers cozy accommodations and authentic Slovenian cuisine. It is only 30 kilometers from Bled and about a five-hour drive from Munich. Those who want to experience authentic, unspoiled Slovenia away from Instagram hotspots will find their paradise in Bohinj.
