Bled

Bled is a small town in the Julian Alps of Slovenia, which has become one of the most photographed places in Europe due to its fairy-tale lake. The emerald-green Lake Bled with its tiny island, topped by a white Baroque church, framed by snow-capped Alpine peaks and a medieval castle on a rock — this image looks like it is from a fairy tale and is yet completely real. The island Blejski Otok is the heart of the area. A ride on the traditional Pletna — a handcrafted wooden boat rowed by standing boatmen — is a must-do. Upon arriving on the island, one climbs 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption and rings the wish bell — according to legend, every wish is granted when the bell rings three times. Bled Castle sits atop a 130-meter high rock above the lake and is the oldest castle in Slovenia. From the terrace, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the entire Alpine region can be enjoyed: the lake with the island, the Karawanken mountains in the background, and on clear days, the 2,864-meter high Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain. The lake can be comfortably circled on foot in an hour — the path leads through forests, past historic villas and swimming spots with views of the island from various perspectives. In summer, the water reaches 24°C and invites swimming; in winter, the lake occasionally freezes completely — a magical sight. The Vintgar Gorge, just 4 kilometers away, is a spectacular canyon through which the Radovna River rushes in turquoise water over cascades and waterfalls. Wooden walkways lead 1.6 kilometers through the narrow gorge — a natural experience that perfectly complements a visit to the lake.

Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is Slovenia's most charming alpine resort and a year-round destination that delights in winter with ski slopes and in summer with hiking trails and cycling routes. The small town in the far northwest of Slovenia is located at the tripoint with Austria and Italy, nestled in a valley of the Julian Alps, surrounded by majestic peaks. For German travelers seeking alpine experiences without the prices of Switzerland or Tyrol, Kranjska Gora is a real bargain. In winter, Kranjska Gora transforms into a lively ski resort with 20 kilometers of slopes that are particularly suitable for families and beginners. The annual Ski World Cup races on the Podkoren slope bring international flair to the town. The Planica cross-country skiing center, just a few kilometers away, is world-renowned for its giant ski flying hill and offers excellent trails in a breathtaking valley basin. The Vrsic Pass is the summer highlight and one of the most spectacular alpine passes in Europe. At an altitude of 1,611 meters, the road with 50 hairpin turns – each individually numbered – crosses the Julian Alps and connects Kranjska Gora with the Soca Valley. The Russian Chapel on the pass commemorates the prisoners of war who built the road during World War I. From the top, hikes lead to mountain huts and peaks with panoramic views all the way to the Adriatic. In summer, Kranjska Gora is a paradise for cyclists and hikers. The cycle path to Italy along the former railway line passes through tunnels and over viaducts, and the Zelenci Nature Reserve with its emerald green karst springs is a natural jewel. The nearby Soca Valley, accessible only via the Vrsic Pass, captivates with turquoise wild waters, kayaking, and canyoning. Kranjska Gora is only 90 kilometers from Ljubljana and 200 kilometers from Munich – perfect for a long weekend in the Alps.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a hidden gem among European capitals — a compact, green city on the Ljubljanica River that feels like a mix of Prague and Vienna, but without the crowds. The architect Joze Plecnik gave the city a unique face in the 20th century: the Triple Bridge, the market halls, and the riverside promenade bear his signature. The old town with its baroque facades, arcades, and cafes along the riverbank is car-free — Ljubljana was named Europe's Green Capital in 2016. The castle (Ljubljanski Grad) on the hill offers panoramic views of the Julian Alps in the background. Metelkova, an occupied cultural center in a former barracks, is Ljubljana's alternative heart with galleries, bars, and street art. From Ljubljana, Lake Bled (50 min), the Postojna Cave (45 min), the Adriatic coast (1.5 h), and the Soca Valley (2 h) are accessible — Slovenia packs alpine, Mediterranean, and karst landscapes into a country the size of Hesse.

Piran

Piran is Slovenia's Venetian jewel on the Adriatic – a picturesque coastal town on a narrow peninsula that, with its pastel-colored facades, narrow streets, Venetian bell towers, and wide views over the Mediterranean, feels like a piece of Italy that has wandered into Slovenia. The town actually belonged to the Republic of Venice for centuries, and this influence is still palpable in every corner – from the architecture to the bilingual street signs (Slovenian and Italian) to the cuisine, which uniquely blends Provençal, Venetian, and Slovenian traditions. Tartini Square, named after the violin virtuoso Giuseppe Tartini who was born here, is the oval heart of the town – an elegantly paved square surrounded by palaces, cafés, and the magnificent town hall, considered one of the most beautiful squares along the entire Adriatic coast. From here, narrow streets wind up the hill to St. George's Church, whose bell tower is a scaled-down replica of the Campanile di San Marco in Venice and offers the best panoramic view of the city – over the red roofs to the Piran peninsula, the Gulf of Trieste, and on clear days as far as the Alps and the Italian coast. The 15th-century city wall encloses the old town on the hillside and is walkable – the walk along the battlements offers dramatic views of the town and the sea. Below the wall, small rocky coves and bathing spots stretch out where one can swim in the crystal-clear Adriatic water. The salt pans of Sečovlje on the outskirts have been producing the famous Piran salt since the Middle Ages, which is now valued worldwide as a gourmet product. For German travelers, Piran is an excellent insider tip: the town offers Venetian charm without the crowds and prices of Venice, is reachable from Munich in about 5 hours by car, and can be perfectly combined with a visit to Ljubljana, the Postojna Caves, or Lake Bled. Slovenia is an EU and Euro country, making travel particularly uncomplicated.

Portorož

Portorož is Slovenia's only true seaside spa resort, combining a long sandy beach with top-notch thermal and wellness offerings. The name means 'Harbor of Roses,' and indeed the place exudes a touch of sophisticated bathing culture with its Belle Époque hotels, elegant beach promenade, and Mediterranean gardens. The spas utilize mineral-rich water and salt mud from the nearby Sečovlje salt pans for healing treatments, known since the 13th century. Together with the neighboring Piran, Portorož offers the perfect mix of relaxation, culture, and Mediterranean enjoyment on the Slovenian Adriatic coast.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is the epitome of romance: a tiny island with a white Baroque church sits in the middle of an emerald-green lake, flanked by a medieval castle on a 130-meter-high cliff and the snow-capped Julian Alps in the background. It is a scene so perfectly composed that it almost seems unreal — and yet it is very real and just a few hours' drive from Munich. The tradition of Pletna boats — handcrafted, flat-bottomed gondolas rowed by standing rowers to the island — dates back to the 12th century. Upon arriving at the island, one climbs 99 stone steps to the Church of the Assumption, whose wish bell is said to grant any wish if rung three times. Whether it works is debatable — but the atmosphere on the quiet island, surrounded by smooth water and mountains, is indeed magical. Bled Castle, built in the 11th century and thus the oldest castle in Slovenia, offers a classic postcard view of the lake and island from its rocky throne. Inside, there is a museum, a printing workshop with a historical Gutenberg press, and a wine cellar where you can bottle your own wine and label it personally. The lake itself is warm enough for swimming in summer (up to 26°C) and is surrounded by a 6-kilometer-long promenade, which is one of the most beautiful walking paths in Slovenia. The Vintgar Gorge, just 4 kilometers to the north, leads over wooden walkways and bridges along a roaring gorge to a 13-meter-high waterfall — a perfect half-day trip. And the famous Cremeschnitte (Kremšnita) enjoyed at the Grand Hotel Toplice, right on the lakeshore, is the sweet conclusion to a perfect day.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of the most enchanting natural wonders in Europe and the most photographed motif in Slovenia. Nestled in the Julian Alps, the emerald green glacial lake lies at the foot of a medieval castle on a steep cliff, while a baroque church with its wish bell crowns Slovenia's only island. This scenery is so perfect that it seems unreal – yet it is real and just a few hours' drive from Germany. Blejski Otok Island is the heart of the lake. Traditional Pletna boats, rowed by standing boatmen like Venetian gondolas, take visitors across the tranquil water to the Church of the Assumption. According to legend, a wish comes true when the bell in the tower is rung three times. The 99 steps up to the church are part of the ritual, especially popular among newly engaged couples. High above the lake, Bled Castle sits atop a 130-meter high cliff – the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011. From the castle terrace, a breathtaking view opens up over the lake, the island, and the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps. Inside, a museum tells the story of the region, and a printing house offers visitors the chance to print on historical presses themselves. The six-kilometer lakeside path encircles the entire lake and is perfect for a walk or a jogging round. In summer, the water reaches a pleasant 24 degrees and invites swimming. The famous Bled cream cake – Kremna Rezina – is a must in any of the lakeside cafes. From Germany, Bled can be reached in about five to six hours by car, and the nearest airport, Ljubljana, is only 45 minutes away. The best time to visit is from May to September, with autumn being particularly photogenic due to its foliage.

Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is the quiet, untouched brother of Lake Bled and for many connoisseurs, the even more beautiful natural jewel of Slovenia. While Bled attracts tourists with its church island, Bohinj, as the largest natural lake in the country, lies in the midst of the Triglav National Park in almost untouched wilderness. The crystal-clear, emerald-green water reflects the rugged peaks of the Julian Alps, and the shores exude a tranquility that is rarely found in the Alps anymore. The Triglav National Park, which surrounds the entire Lake Bohinj, is Slovenia's only national park and a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers. The namesake Triglav, with its 2,864 meters, is the highest mountain in Slovenia and a national symbol – its peak even adorns the national flag. Numerous hiking trails lead from Bohinj into the alpine world: from the leisurely lakeside path to the challenging ascent of Triglav through the Valley of the Seven Lakes. On the western shore of the lake, the Savica waterfall plunges 78 meters down and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia. The 553 steps through the forest up to the waterfall make for a rewarding half-day trip. At the opposite end, a cable car connects the lake with the Vogel ski area at an altitude of 1,535 meters, from where an overwhelming panorama of the lake and the entire mountain range opens up. Bohinj is perfect for travelers seeking nature instead of hustle and bustle. In summer, you can swim in the clear lake, go stand-up paddling, or canoeing; in autumn, the foliage ignites in all shades of red, and in winter, Vogel transforms into a charming ski resort. The small village of Ribcev Laz on the eastern shore offers cozy accommodations and authentic Slovenian cuisine. It is only 30 kilometers from Bled and about a five-hour drive from Munich. Those who want to experience authentic, unspoiled Slovenia away from Instagram hotspots will find their paradise in Bohinj.
