About Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of the most enchanting natural wonders in Europe and the most photographed motif in Slovenia. Nestled in the Julian Alps, the emerald green glacial lake lies at the foot of a medieval castle on a steep cliff, while a baroque church with its wish bell crowns Slovenia's only island. This scenery is so perfect that it seems unreal – yet it is real and just a few hours' drive from Germany. Blejski Otok Island is the heart of the lake. Traditional Pletna boats, rowed by standing boatmen like Venetian gondolas, take visitors across the tranquil water to the Church of the Assumption. According to legend, a wish comes true when the bell in the tower is rung three times. The 99 steps up to the church are part of the ritual, especially popular among newly engaged couples. High above the lake, Bled Castle sits atop a 130-meter high cliff – the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011. From the castle terrace, a breathtaking view opens up over the lake, the island, and the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps. Inside, a museum tells the story of the region, and a printing house offers visitors the chance to print on historical presses themselves. The six-kilometer lakeside path encircles the entire lake and is perfect for a walk or a jogging round. In summer, the water reaches a pleasant 24 degrees and invites swimming. The famous Bled cream cake – Kremna Rezina – is a must in any of the lakeside cafes. From Germany, Bled can be reached in about five to six hours by car, and the nearest airport, Ljubljana, is only 45 minutes away. The best time to visit is from May to September, with autumn being particularly photogenic due to its foliage.
