About Ljubljana

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a hidden gem among European capitals — a compact, green city on the Ljubljanica River that feels like a mix of Prague and Vienna, but without the crowds. The architect Joze Plecnik gave the city a unique face in the 20th century: the Triple Bridge, the market halls, and the riverside promenade bear his signature. The old town with its baroque facades, arcades, and cafes along the riverbank is car-free — Ljubljana was named Europe's Green Capital in 2016. The castle (Ljubljanski Grad) on the hill offers panoramic views of the Julian Alps in the background. Metelkova, an occupied cultural center in a former barracks, is Ljubljana's alternative heart with galleries, bars, and street art. From Ljubljana, Lake Bled (50 min), the Postojna Cave (45 min), the Adriatic coast (1.5 h), and the Soca Valley (2 h) are accessible — Slovenia packs alpine, Mediterranean, and karst landscapes into a country the size of Hesse.
