About Prague

Prague, the golden city on the Vltava, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and impresses with its nearly perfectly preserved historic old town, which uniquely combines Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Cubism. The Czech capital offers a density of architectural beauty that rivals even Paris and Vienna — and at significantly lower prices. The Charles Bridge, lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints, connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town and the mighty Prague Castle, the largest contiguous castle complex in the world. St. Vitus Cathedral within the castle impresses with its Gothic towers and Alfons Mucha's Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The Old Town Square with the astronomical clock, which has shown its apostolic procession every hour since 1410, is the pulsating heart of the city. Prague's beer culture is legendary: Pilsner was invented here, and in historic beer halls like U Fleku (since 1499) and Strahov Monastery Brewery, top-quality beer flows for three to four euros per half liter. The Jewish Quarter Josefov, with its synagogues and the old cemetery, tells a moving story. The Vinohrady district offers the hip, local side of Prague away from the tourist crowds. Prague is attractive year-round, with May and September offering the best weather and fewer crowds.

4 travel tips for Prague

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Beer in Prague pubs often costs less than water – the hospoda (pub) U Fleků has been brewing its own dark beer since 1499.

Visit the Charles Bridge at sunrise (before 7 AM) – during the day it is overcrowded with thousands of tourists.

Trdelník (the 'Bohemian' chimney cake) is actually not a Czech dish – for real cuisine, rather try Svíčková or Knedlíky.

Prague Castle has free entry to the courtyard and St. Vitus Cathedral – only the interiors require tickets.

Food & drink in Prague

These specialties you must try!

Svíčková na Smetaně — Beef roast in creamy root vegetable sauce with dumplings and cranberries – the Czech national dish.
Vepřo-Knedlo-Zelo — Roast pork with sauerkraut and dumplings – Bohemia's hearty trio, perfect with beer.
Pilsner Urquell — The original pilsner – in Prague, fresh from the tap, incomparably better than from the bottle. Tank pubs serve it unpasteurized.
Trdelník — Yeast dough rolled over charcoal with sugar and cinnamon – touristy, but still delicious and warm on cold days.
Kulajda — Creamy mushroom soup with dill, potatoes, and poached egg – Czechia's best soup, especially in autumn.
