Travel tips, best time to visit & highlights for your Czech Republic holiday in Europe
Czech Republic is much more than Prague and beer – although both are worth the trip on their own. The golden city on the Vltava is one of the most beautiful in Europe, along with romantic spa towns like Karlovy Vary, medieval castles, and the Bohemian Switzerland. The value for money is excellent.

Český Krumlov
Český Krumlov is a vibrant fairy tale from the Middle Ages — a small Bohemian town that nestles picturesquely in a loop of the Vltava River, and whose completely preserved old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The second castle of the Czech Republic (after Prague Castle) towers on a rock above the river, and below it spreads a tangle of pastel-colored Renaissance houses, cobblestone streets, and Gothic churches that have hardly changed since the 14th century. The Český Krumlov Castle is an architectural colossus made up of five courtyards, a Baroque theater (one of only three fully preserved Baroque theaters in the world with original scenery and mechanics), and the castle tower, whose brightly painted Renaissance facade looks like an oversized painting. The Cloak Bridge, a multi-story covered walkway, connects the upper castle with the castle garden and offers one of the most beautiful views in Central Europe from above. The Vltava River encircles the old town in an elegant S-curve and is full of canoeists and rafting enthusiasts in summer: The stretch from Vyšší Brod to Český Krumlov is one of the most popular paddling routes in the Czech Republic, passing by forests, castle ruins, and small weirs. The Egon Schiele Center commemorates the Austrian expressionist who lived in Český Krumlov in 1911 (the town was his mother's home) and created some of his most famous works here before he had to leave the town due to a scandal. The art gallery displays originals and documents his turbulent time in the Bohemian town. At night, when the day tourists have left, Český Krumlov transforms: The illuminated castle reflects in the Vltava, and jazz and blues play in the vaulted cellar bars.

Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) is the most magnificent spa town in Central Europe — a city that resembles an imperial film set, nestled in a wooded valley by the Teplá River. For centuries, spa guests have been coming here to drink the healing thermal water from 15 hot springs. Beethoven, Goethe, Chopin, and Kafka — they all took the waters here. The main colonnade spans the hottest spring, the Vřídlo geyser, which shoots up to 12 meters high. The five historic colonnades line the river and invite visitors to promenade and drink thermal water — traditionally from the typical Karlsbad drinking cups. The city impresses with pastel-colored Art Nouveau facades that rise amphitheatrically up the slopes. The Grandhotel Pupp — filming location for the James Bond film Casino Royale — embodies the Belle Époque elegance of spa tourism. From Germany, the city is reachable in a few hours: from Nuremberg in two hours, from Dresden in 2.5 hours.

Prague
Prague, the golden city on the Vltava, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and impresses with its nearly perfectly preserved historic old town, which uniquely combines Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Cubism. The Czech capital offers a density of architectural beauty that rivals even Paris and Vienna — and at significantly lower prices. The Charles Bridge, lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints, connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town and the mighty Prague Castle, the largest contiguous castle complex in the world. St. Vitus Cathedral within the castle impresses with its Gothic towers and Alfons Mucha's Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The Old Town Square with the astronomical clock, which has shown its apostolic procession every hour since 1410, is the pulsating heart of the city. Prague's beer culture is legendary: Pilsner was invented here, and in historic beer halls like U Fleku (since 1499) and Strahov Monastery Brewery, top-quality beer flows for three to four euros per half liter. The Jewish Quarter Josefov, with its synagogues and the old cemetery, tells a moving story. The Vinohrady district offers the hip, local side of Prague away from the tourist crowds. Prague is attractive year-round, with May and September offering the best weather and fewer crowds.
