About Cenotes of Yucatan
The cenotes of Yucatan are a unique natural phenomenon worldwide – thousands of natural limestone sinkholes filled with crystal-clear groundwater, interconnected by the longest underwater cave system in the world. Geologists estimate that there are over 6,000 cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula, many of which remain undiscovered. For the Maya, these mysterious water holes were sacred entrances to the underworld Xibalba and vital sources of drinking water. The variety of cenotes is overwhelming: Open cenotes like the famous Cenote Ik Kil near Chichen Itza resemble natural swimming pools, surrounded by hanging roots and tropical vegetation. Semi-open cenotes like Cenote Suytun impress with dramatic light beams through the partially collapsed ceiling. Fully underground cenotes like the cenotes of Sac Actun offer a mystical experience with stalactites and crystal-clear water in complete silence. Particularly recommended are the Cenote Dos Ojos near Tulum for divers and snorkelers, the Gran Cenote with its turtles, Cenote Oxman near Valladolid with its spectacular swing, and the less-visited Cenote Xcanche near the Maya ruin Ek Balam. Many cenotes charge an entrance fee of around €5 to €15, and life jackets and lockers are usually available. The water temperature remains pleasantly between 24 to 26 degrees year-round – a welcome refreshment in the tropical climate of Yucatan.
