About Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is the relaxed counterpart to bustling Cancun – a Caribbean island only seven kilometers long and 650 meters wide, reachable by ferry in just 20 minutes, yet representing a completely different world. Here, there are no high-rises, but colorful wooden houses in Caribbean style, golf carts instead of cars, and the supposedly most beautiful beach in Mexico: Playa Norte, where powdery white sand gently transitions into turquoise water. The island has much more to offer than just beach life. At the southern tip, Punta Sur, the ruins of a Mayan temple sit atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the open sea – a place that is the first piece of Mexican land touched by the sun every morning. The underwater museum MUSA, with over 500 sunken sculptures, is one of the most unusual diving and snorkeling destinations in the world. In summer, snorkeling with whale sharks can be done off the coast. The center of the island around the main street Hidalgo features colorful souvenir shops, authentic fish restaurants, and a lively but never intrusive atmosphere. In the evenings, the streets transform into open-air kitchens with fresh tacos and grill specialties. Isla Mujeres is perfect for a day trip from Cancun, but those who want to experience the magical sunset at Playa Norte and the tranquility after the departure of day visitors should spend at least one night on the island.
