About Mexico City
Mexico City, one of the largest metropolises in the world, is a cultural melting pot full of contrasts: Aztec temple ruins stand next to colonial cathedrals, ultramodern architecture meets colorful markets, and the city's cuisine is as diverse as its 22 million inhabitants. The Zocalo, one of the largest squares in the world, forms the historical center with the monumental Catedral Metropolitana and the Templo Mayor — the remains of the Aztec main temple, which was rediscovered in 1978. The Museo Nacional de Antropologia in Chapultepec Park is the most significant archaeological museum in Latin America: The Aztec Sun Stone, Maya jade masks, and Olmec colossal heads tell the story of thousands of years of Mesoamerican high cultures. Chapultepec Park itself is twice the size of New York's Central Park and houses a castle, a zoo, and a botanical garden. Coyoacan, the tree-lined artists' district, attracts visitors from around the world with the Casa Azul (Frida Kahlo Museum). The bright blue house where Frida Kahlo was born and died showcases personal items, paintings, and the garden that inspired her art. Just 50 kilometers northeast rise the pyramids of Teotihuacan — the Sun and Moon pyramids are among the largest pre-Hispanic structures in the Americas. The floating gardens of Xochimilco, a network of colorful trajinera boats and artificial islands (chinampas), offer a unique experience with mariachi music and fresh food from neighboring boats. Mexico City's street food is legendary: Tacos al Pastor, Tlacoyos, Esquites, and Churros are available on every corner. The city has the highest restaurant density in Latin America, and Pujol regularly ranks among the best restaurants in the world.
