About Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve
Sian Ka'an – Maya for Gateway to Heaven – is a 5,280 square kilometer UNESCO Biosphere Reserve south of Tulum and one of the largest protected areas in the Mexican Caribbean. It includes tropical rainforests, mangroves, wetlands, freshwater lagoons, coral reefs, and over 120 kilometers of pristine coastline. With over 300 bird species, 100 mammal species, and four different ecosystems, Sian Ka'an is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Here, jaguars, pumas, tapirs, crocodiles, manatees, and several species of sea turtles live in their natural habitat. The mangrove channels can be explored by kayak or boat, where, with a bit of luck, you can spot dolphins, crocodiles, and the rare Jabiru stork. A special highlight is floating through the ancient Maya canals: You drift with the natural current through crystal-clear water, surrounded by lush vegetation – a meditative experience that cannot be found anywhere else. Within the reserve, there are also the archaeological Maya sites of Muyil and the hard-to-reach ruins of Chunyaxche. Guided tours start daily from Tulum and offer boat trips through the lagoons, snorkeling at the reef, and visits to the bird colonies. Since access is strictly regulated to protect the ecosystem, booking through authorized tour providers is recommended. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April.
