About Teotihuacan
Teotihuacan – the city where humans became gods – was once the largest metropolis of the pre-Columbian world with over 100,000 inhabitants and is now one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Americas. Located just 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City, the monumental Pyramid of the Sun, standing 65 meters tall, the slightly smaller Pyramid of the Moon, and the over two-kilometer-long Avenue of the Dead, which once formed the ceremonial center of a mysterious high culture, impress visitors. The artistically restored temples of Quetzalcoatl, adorned with stone serpent heads and obsidian eyes, are among the most impressive examples of Mesoamerican architecture. A visit in the early morning hours is particularly recommended when the rising sun bathes the pyramids in golden light and the crowds are still small. Climbing the Pyramid of the Sun rewards visitors with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama over the Valley of Mexico. The attached museum showcases fascinating finds such as the famous obsidian mask and wall paintings that provide insights into the life of this mysterious civilization, whose name remains unknown to this day. Teotihuacan is easily accessible from Mexico City as a half-day trip – buses run regularly from Terminal del Norte. For a special experience, hot air balloon rides over the pyramids are offered, providing spectacular aerial views. The best time to visit is from October to May, with pleasant weather and clear visibility.
