About Zapopan

Zapopan is a large city in western Mexico and part of the Guadalajara metropolitan area in the state of Jalisco. Although administratively independent, Zapopan and Guadalajara together form one of the most important economic and cultural centers in Latin America — the cradle of tequila and mariachi music. The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan is the spiritual heart of the city and one of Mexico's most important pilgrimage sites. Every year on October 12, the Romería de la Virgen de Zapopan is celebrated — a million-person procession from Guadalajara Cathedral to the basilica, which is one of the largest religious festivals in the world. The Barranca de Huentitán is a spectacular canyon on the outskirts with over 600 meters in depth, hiking trails, and the famous Cola de Caballo waterfall. The Bosque Los Colomos is an expansive park with Japanese gardens and eucalyptus forests — ideal for jogging and picnicking. Zapopan is also the center of the Mexican Silicon Valley: numerous tech companies and start-ups have settled here, giving the city a young, dynamic atmosphere. The craft beer scene is booming, and along Avenida Patria, restaurants, bars, and galleries line the street.
