Egypt's Deserts
Egypt has not one, but several fascinating desert landscapes:
- White Desert (Sahara el-Beida): Surreal limestone formations, eroded into shapes resembling mushrooms, animals, and humans. In the moonlight, they look like a snowy landscape. Camping under the starry sky is an unforgettable experience. Bookable from Cairo as a 2-day tour (80–120 € per person).
- Black Desert: Volcanic basalt hills that darken the desert — a dramatic contrast to the White Desert. Often visited on the same tour.
- Sinai Desert: Red granite mountains, deep canyons, Bedouin cultures. Quite different from the western Sahara — more rugged, mountainous, and colorful.
- Siwa Oasis: The most remote oasis in Egypt, near the Libyan border. Berber culture, hot springs, the Oracle Temple of Amun (where Alexander the Great was declared the son of the god). Salt lakes, date palms, absolute tranquility. From Cairo: 8–10 hours by bus or off-road vehicle.
