Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum houses the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh — over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters. The museum chronologically tells the story of a man who sold only one painting during his lifetime and is now considered one of the most influential artists in history.

The Highlights

  • The Sunflowers (1889): One of the world's most famous paintings — vibrant yellow sunflowers in a vase, painted in Arles. The original in Amsterdam is one of five versions.
  • The Bedroom in Arles (1888): Van Gogh's famous painting of his bedroom in the "Yellow House" — perspective distorted, in bold colors, a window into his soul.
  • Almond Blossom (1890): Japanese-inspired almond branches against a blue sky, painted for his newborn nephew Vincent Willem. One of his most hopeful works — just months before his death.
  • The Potato Eaters (1885): Van Gogh's first major work, still dark and expressive. Peasants at dinner, illuminated by a single lamp. The hands and faces tell of hard work.
  • Wheatfield with Crows (1890): One of the last paintings before his death — dramatic sky, ominous crows, a path leading to nowhere. The interpretation has been debated for 130 years.
