The Canal Belt

Amsterdam's Canal Belt (Grachtengordel) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 and is one of the greatest examples of urban planning in history. In the 17th century—the Golden Age—the city was systematically expanded with three concentric main canals:

The Three Main Canals

  • Herengracht (Gentlemen's Canal): The most prestigious canal, named after the "gentlemen" (regents) of the city. The "Golden Bend" (Gouden Bocht) between Leidsestraat and Vijzelstraat showcases the most magnificent patrician houses—home to the wealthiest quarter in the world. Today: consulates, offices, and some of the most expensive real estate in Europe.
  • Keizersgracht (Emperor's Canal): The widest canal, named after Emperor Maximilian I. Elegant gabled houses, the house with the widest canal house (No. 401), and the Museum van Loon (an original 17th-century patrician house, admission: €12.50).
  • Prinsengracht (Prince's Canal): The outermost and liveliest canal. Here you'll find the Anne Frank House (No. 263), the Westerkerk (Amsterdam's tallest church tower, 85 m), houseboats, and the best cafes. Less pompous than the Herengracht, but more atmospheric.

Canal Cruise

A canal cruise is a must—even if it sounds touristy. From the water, you see the gabled houses, hidden gardens, and bridges from a perspective impossible from the shore. Providers: Those Dam Boat Guys (small, personal tours, from €28), Blue Boat Company (classic, from €16), or rent a pedal boat (from €15/hour for 2 people) and drive yourself. Best enjoyed: at sunset, when the gabled houses glow golden and the bridge lights come on.

💡 Tipp

The leaning gables of Amsterdam's canal houses are not a construction flaw—they were intentionally tilted forward so that goods could be hoisted up without damaging the facade. The hook at the gable's peak (hijsbalk) can still be seen on almost every house today.
