Vondelpark & Museum Quarter
Vondelpark
Amsterdam's green lung (47 hectares) is the city's most popular park—and in summer, it's one big picnic spot. Every year, 10 million visitors come: for jogging, roller skating, playing guitar, sunbathing, and people-watching. In summer, there are free open-air concerts in the open-air theater. In the park: the Café Blauwe Theehuis (1937, an architectural highlight in the shape of a flying saucer) and the rose garden with 70 varieties of roses. Free, open year-round.
Museumplein (Museum Square)
The Museum Square at the southern edge of Vondelpark is Amsterdam's cultural mile: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and the Concertgebouw (concert hall with one of the best acoustics in the world) are all within a few hundred meters. The large I amsterdam sign (letters for climbing and photographing) stood here for years but was removed in 2018 (overtourism). Nevertheless, the Museum Square remains the cultural heart of the city.
Concertgebouw
The Koninklijk Concertgebouw (1888) is one of the acoustically best concert halls in the world—on par with the Vienna Musikverein and the Boston Symphony Hall. Classical concerts from €25, sometimes free Wednesday lunch concerts (12:30 pm, registration required). Even without a concert: admire the architecture from the outside.
