The Danube Bend (Dunakanyar)

The Danube Bend (Dunakanyar) is the most spectacular section of the Danube in Hungary: About 40 km north of Budapest, the river makes a dramatic 90° turn between wooded hills. On the banks: medieval castle ruins, historic towns, and a panorama reminiscent of the Rhine — only wilder and less touristy.

Visegrád

Visegrád was the royal residence of Hungary in the 14th–15th centuries. King Matthias Corvinus built a Renaissance palace here, which was among the most magnificent in Europe — today only ruins remain, but they dramatically overlook the Danube.

  • Upper Castle (Fellegvár): The medieval castle on the 330-meter hill offers the best view of the Danube Bend — the river's curve, the hills, the silence. The climb (20 minutes) or the minibus ride is absolutely worth it. Admission: 2,000 HUF (5€).
  • Royal Palace: The excavations of the Renaissance palace on the riverbank reveal its former splendor: marble fountains, colonnades, gardens. Admission: 1,800 HUF (4.50€).

Esztergom

Esztergom is the cradle of the Hungarian state: Here, Saint Stephen I was crowned the first king of Hungary in the year 1000. The city is the seat of the archbishop and the religious capital of the country.

  • Esztergom Basilica: The largest church in Hungary and one of the largest in Europe: 118 meters long, 40 meters wide, dome height 71.5 meters. Inside: the Bakócz Chapel (1507), a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture made of red marble. The dome is accessible — the view over the Danube and Slovakia (on the other side!) is breathtaking. Admission: Basilica free, Dome: 800 HUF (2€), Treasury: 1,200 HUF (3€).
  • Danube Bridge to Štúrovo: You can walk into Slovakia via the Maria Valeria Bridge — a curious border crossing in the middle of the bridge. On the Slovak side: a coffee for half the Hungarian price.

Getting There

The Danube Bend is a perfect day trip from Budapest:

  • Boat: MAHART Danube ship from Budapest (Vigadó tér) to Visegrád (1.5h) and Esztergom (3h). The most beautiful way to experience the Danube Bend. Only April–September, check the schedule.
  • Train: To Esztergom from Budapest-Nyugati (1.5h, hourly, from 1,200 HUF / 3€).
  • Bus: To Visegrád from Budapest Árpád híd (1h, hourly).
  • Rental car: Most flexible option — Visegrád + Esztergom + Szentendre in one day.
