Other Baths & Bathing Etiquette

Other Thermal Baths

  • Király Bath (Király Gyógyfürdő): Another Ottoman bath (1565), smaller and more intimate than Rudas. Octagonal dome, historical atmosphere, fewer tourists. Renovated and modern, but with an Ottoman core. Döbrentei tér 9. From 3,600 HUF (9€).
  • Veli Bej Bath (Veli Bej Fürdő): The most elegant Ottoman bath — renovated with modern design, quiet and exclusive. Perfect for wellness fans who want to combine luxury and history. Árpád fejedelem útja 7. From 5,200 HUF (13€).
  • Palatinus Strandbad (Margaret Island): In summer: Budapest's most popular outdoor pool on Margaret Island — giant slides, wave pool, thermal pools, and sunbathing lawns. Perfect for families. Only May–September. From 4,000 HUF (10€).
  • Lukács Bath (Lukács Gyógyfürdő): The bath of locals and intellectuals — less splendid than Széchenyi or Gellért, but authentic and affordable. Outdoor pools in summer, regulars who have been coming for decades. Frankel Leó út 25–29. From 4,000 HUF (10€).

Bathing Etiquette & Tips

  • Swimsuit/Swim Trunks: Required in most baths. Nudity only in special areas (rare).
  • Swim Caps: Often required in swimming pools (not in thermal pools) — cheap disposable caps are available at the counter.
  • Towel: Bring your own or rent (1,500–2,000 HUF). Many baths also have bathrobes for rent.
  • Cabin vs. Locker: A cabin (kabin) is a private lockable room — more expensive but convenient. A locker (szekrény) is a locker — cheaper but less private.
  • Valuables: Keep them in the cabin or in a waterproof wristband safe (available at the counter). Do not leave anything at the poolside.
  • Drinking Water: Drink plenty! The warm water dehydrates the body. Some baths have drinking fountains with thermal water (mineral, slightly sulfurous).
  • Bathing Duration: 2–3 hours is ideal. Do not stay too long in hot pools (38°C+) — 15–20 minutes, then cool down. Alternating baths (warm-cold) are healthier and more refreshing.
