Accommodation in San José
Most travelers spend only 1–2 nights in San José before moving on. The best area to stay is Barrio Escalante (safe, good restaurants) or Barrio Amón (historic, close to the center). Avoid the direct city center at night.

💡 Tipp
If your flight arrives late at night or departs early in the morning: Stay in Alajuela (near the SJO airport) instead of San José. Hotels like the Adventure Inn or the Buena Vista Hotel are 10 minutes from the terminal and save the stressful night transfer into the city.
