Whisky — Scotland's Soul

Whisky (in Scotland ALWAYS without an "e" — "whiskey" is Irish!) is more than a drink: It is Scotland's national identity in liquid form. Distillation began in the monasteries in the Middle Ages, and today there are over 130 active distilleries in the country. Edinburgh is the perfect gateway to the world of Scotch.

Whisky Basics

  • Single Malt: From a single distillery, made from malted barley. The royal class. Tastes completely different depending on the region.
  • Blended: A mix of different distilleries — softer, more accessible. Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Famous Grouse.
  • The Regions: Islay (peaty, smoky, maritime — Laphroaig, Lagavulin), Speyside (fruity, complex — Glenfiddich, Macallan), Highland (diverse — Dalmore, Oban), Lowland (light, floral — Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie).

Experience Whisky in Edinburgh

  • Scotch Whisky Experience: On the Royal Mile, right by the Castle. Interactive tour through whisky production, smelling and tasting the regions, and a tasting. The Silver Tour (£18) is enough for a start, the Gold Tour (£35) offers a deeper tasting.
  • Cadenhead's Whisky Shop: Since 1842, Canongate (Royal Mile). Independent bottler with single-cask whiskies you won't find anywhere else. Small group tastings (£25–40). A must for connoisseurs.
  • The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS): Exclusive club based in Leith (The Vaults, 87 Giles Street). Non-members can visit the bar and sample from an incredible selection. Atmosphere: a Victorian gentleman's club.
  • Pubs with a large whisky selection: The Bow Bar (over 300 whiskies), The Last Drop (Grassmarket), Jolly Judge (James Court, off the Royal Mile).

💡 Tipp

Never order whisky in a pub as "Scotch" (only Americans in movies say that). Just say "a dram of [Name]" or "a wee dram, please". And don't drink it on ice — a few drops of water are allowed and open up the aromas, ice dilutes and cools the taste buds.
