The Lake & Its Villages

The Lago de Atitlán is situated at an altitude of 1,562 m in a gigantic volcanic crater (caldera) that formed around 84,000 years ago. The lake is up to 340 m deep, has no visible outflow, and is flanked by three volcanoes: Tolimán (3,158 m), Atitlán (3,537 m), and San Pedro (3,020 m). The colors of the water change from deep blue to turquoise to emerald green depending on the light and wind — it's as if someone placed a gemstone in the mountains.

Around the lake are a dozen villages, mostly inhabited by the indigenous Tz'utujil and Kaqchikel Maya populations. Each village has its own identity, textile pattern, and character. The connection between the villages is via Lancha (motorboat) — the main mode of transport on the lake.

The Main Places on the Lake

  • Panajachel (Pana): The gateway to the lake — largest town, tourist center, with the best infrastructure (ATMs, supermarkets, shuttles). Calle Santander is a promenade full of souvenir shops and restaurants. Convenient as a base, but not the most charming place.
  • San Pedro La Laguna: Backpacker mecca with cheap hostels, bars, Spanish schools, and a relaxed hippie atmosphere. The nights are lively, and the volcano hike to San Pedro is a highlight.
  • San Marcos La Laguna: The spiritual center — yoga retreats, meditation centers, cacao ceremonies, and a New Age community. Quiet, picturesque, and ideal for unwinding.
  • San Juan La Laguna: The artistic village — famous for its weaving art, natural dye cooperatives, and murals. Here you can see women still working on the traditional backstrap loom (telar de cintura).
  • Santiago Atitlán: The largest indigenous village on the lake with the most vibrant Maya culture. Here, Maximón is revered — a syncretistic holy figure who drinks rum and smokes cigars. The market on Friday is colorful.
  • Santa Cruz La Laguna: A sleepy village, only accessible by boat, with some of the most beautiful accommodations on the lake (eco-lodges on the steep shore).
