Best Travel Time & Climate

Havana has a tropical climate with a distinct dry and rainy season — choosing the right travel month makes the difference between a dream vacation and hurricane risk.

Climate Overview

Havana is located in the Tropics on the Gulf of Mexico. The climate is tropical-humid with a clear division: a dry season (November–April) and a rainy season (May–October). Temperatures are warm to hot year-round.

MonthTemperatureRainy DaysSunshine HoursSea Temperature
Nov–Jan18–27°C3–57–8h26–27°C
Feb–Apr19–29°C2–48–9h26–28°C
May–Jun22–32°C8–118–9h28–29°C
Jul–Aug23–33°C7–109–10h29–30°C
Sep–Oct22–31°C10–137–8h29–28°C

Important: Cuba's hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk in September and October. Severe hurricanes hit Cuba on average every few years — but even without a direct hit, there can be heavy rains and flooding.

Dry Season & Rainy Season

Dry Season (November–April): The Perfect Travel Time

The dry season is the ideal travel time for Havana: 25–30°C, little rain, pleasant humidity, and blue skies. December to March are the most popular months — the temperatures are warm but not oppressive, and the hurricane season is over. Accommodation prices rise in the high season (December–February), but Havana remains very affordable by international standards.

Rainy Season (May–October): Humid but Lively

In the rainy season, it becomes hot and humid (30–35°C, high humidity). There are almost daily short, intense rain showers in the afternoon — usually 30–60 minutes, followed by sunshine again. The Malecón becomes spectacularly flooded during storms. Fewer tourists, cheaper prices, but the risk of tropical storms. September and October are the most risky months — avoid if possible.

Carnival (August)

Havana's Carnival takes place in August — right in the middle of the rainy season. Parades on the Malecón, music, dance, and a lively atmosphere. An experience if you can handle the heat.

Tipp

The absolute best travel time is December to March: pleasant climate, no hurricanes, lively atmosphere. For those who can handle the heat and want to save money: May and June are warm, but still before the hurricane peak and significantly cheaper.

Conclusion: Havana is a year-round destination with a clear recommendation for the dry season. The rainy season has its own charm — lower prices, fewer tourists, and spectacular sunsets after the rain. However, September and October should be avoided due to the hurricane risk.
