Highlands & Rift Valley
Discovering the Highlands
The Kenyan Highlands and the Great Rift Valley together form one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes. The Rift Valley — the great East African rift — stretches like a giant scar through Kenya, creating a chain of lakes, volcanoes, and steep escarpments.
The region lies at an altitude of 1,500–2,500 meters, providing a pleasantly mild climate: daytime temperatures of 20–28°C, cool at night (8–15°C). It is fertile farmland — Kenya's famous tea and coffee grow here. The landscape is green, hilly, and sometimes reminiscent of Switzerland — no wonder the British colonialists felt particularly at home here.
The highlights of the highlands — Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Hell's Gate, and Mount Kenya — can be perfectly combined as a round trip from Nairobi before continuing to the Masai Mara or the coast.
Mount Kenya (5,199 m)★★★
Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The extinct volcano with its three peaks — Batian (5,199 m), Nelion (5,188 m), and Point Lenana (4,985 m) — towers over the equatorial region and, despite its tropical location, has glaciers on its summits (which are rapidly melting).
Ascent — Point Lenana
The highest point for trekkers without climbing equipment is Point Lenana (4,985 m) — accessible via several routes:
- Sirimon Route (northwest side): The most popular and scenically varied route. 4–5 days, through bamboo forest, heath, and alpine desert
- Chogoria Route (east side): The most beautiful route, passing Lake Michaelson and dramatic gorges. 5–6 days, somewhat more challenging
- Naro Moru Route: The shortest (3–4 days) but steepest route. The "Vertical Bog" is notorious
Vegetation Zones
The ascent leads through five climatic zones — like a journey from the equator to the North Pole:
- Montane Forest (2,000–3,000 m): Dense forest with elephants, buffaloes, colobus monkeys
- Bamboo Zone (2,500–3,000 m): Impenetrable bamboo jungle
- Heath and Moorland (3,000–4,000 m): Giant lobelias and senecios, surreal landscape
- Alpine Desert (4,000–4,500 m): Barren, rocky, below 0°C at night
- Glaciers (from 4,500 m): Ice and snow at the equator!
Achtung
Altitude sickness is a serious risk! Ascend slowly, drink plenty, watch for symptoms (headaches, nausea, dizziness). If in doubt, descend immediately. Plan acclimatization days!
Aberdare National Park★★
The Aberdare Range is a mountain range with dense mountain forest, bamboo thickets, moorlands, and waterfalls — completely different from the typical savanna safari. The national park (767 km²) is located northwest of Mount Kenya and is famous for its rainy climate and unique wildlife.
Highlights
- The Ark & Treetops: Legendary lodges built over illuminated waterholes — you can watch elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, and the rare Bongo (a shy forest antelope) from the balcony at night
- Waterfalls: Karuru Falls (273 m, Kenya's highest), Chania Falls, and the picturesque Gura Falls
- Melanistic Leopards: The Aberdares are one of the few places worldwide where black leopards (panthers) are sighted — extremely rare!
- Historical: At the Treetops Hotel, Princess Elizabeth learned in 1952 that her father had died and she had become Queen of England
The Aberdares are not a classic Big Five destination, but perfect for nature lovers who want to experience dense forests, waterfalls, and rare animals in a mystical atmosphere.
Lake Nakuru — Flamingos★★★
The Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for its iconic image: millions of pink flamingos turning the shores of the alkaline soda lake into a pink carpet. Although flamingo numbers have fluctuated since the floods of 2013 (many have migrated to Lake Bogoria), Nakuru remains spectacular.
What You See
- Flamingos: Both lesser and greater flamingos. Best seen on the southern and eastern shores
- Rhinos: The park is a rhino sanctuary with both black and white rhinos — one of the best places in Kenya for rhino sightings
- Rothschild Giraffes: The endangered subspecies has been successfully reintroduced here
- Lions, leopards, buffaloes, waterbucks
- Baboon Cliff: Viewpoint with panoramic views over the entire lake — perfect for photos
The park is compact (188 km²) and can be explored well in half a day — perfect as a stopover on the way to the Masai Mara or Naivasha.
Tipp
If the flamingos are missing at Nakuru, continue to Lake Bogoria (about 1 hour north) — there, millions of flamingos often gather at the hot springs. Even fewer tourists!
Lake Naivasha — Hippos★★
Lake Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley and a popular weekend destination for Nairobi residents — only 90 km from the capital. The lake is situated at an altitude of 1,884 meters and is surrounded by green farmland (Kenya's rose export industry!) and acacia forest.
Highlights
- Boat Trips: On the lake, you encounter hippos in large numbers — they suddenly surface next to the boat and yawn with their huge mouths. Respect the distance! Also cormorants, pelicans, fish eagles, and over 400 bird species
- Crescent Island: A peninsula in the lake where you can walk among giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and waterbucks — one of the few places in Kenya where walking safaris without predators are possible
- Elsamere: The former home of Joy Adamson (author of "Born Free"), now a museum with cozy afternoon tea by the lakeside
Naivasha is ideal as a day trip from Nairobi or as a base for visiting Hell's Gate (15 min drive). Accommodation tip: Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge or Camp Carnelley's on the south shore.
Achtung
Hippos are Africa's most dangerous large animal — more fatalities than lions! Never walk along the lakeshore at night. Keep a distance on the boat.
Hell's Gate NP — Cycling under Vultures★★
Hell's Gate is Kenya's most unusual national park — and the only one you can explore by bicycle or on foot. No predators (except rare leopards), but dramatic volcanic landscapes, steaming gorges, and vulture colonies on reddish-brown rock towers.
What to Expect
- Cycling: Rent a bike at the entrance (Elsa Gate) (about 5 USD) and cycle along the main track through the park — past zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and warthogs. The animals are accustomed to cyclists and hardly shy
- Fischer's Tower: A 25-meter-high volcanic rock tower serving as a nesting site for hundreds of vultures — impressive!
- Ol Njorowa Gorge: A narrow, steep gorge with steaming hot springs and geothermal activity. The hike through the gorge (2–3 hours, guide required) is spectacular
- Climbing: Fischer's Tower and the rock walls are popular with climbers
- Geothermal: Kenya's largest geothermal power plant (Olkaria) is located in the park — Africa's clean energy of the future
Fun Fact: The landscape of Hell's Gate inspired the setting in the Disney film “The Lion King"!
Tipp
Arrive early in the morning (7:00 AM) before the sun becomes too strong. The cycling experience is best during the week — on weekends, many day-trippers from Nairobi visit.
The Great Rift Valley★★
The Great Rift Valley is one of the Earth's most massive geological rifts — a 6,000 km long fracture in the Earth's crust stretching from Mozambique to Lebanon. In Kenya, it is particularly impressive: From the Escarpment near Nairobi, you gaze 600 meters deep into the vast valley — a breathtaking panorama.
The Lakes of the Rift Valley
The valley hosts a chain of lakes, most alkaline (soda lakes), some fresh:
| Lake | Type | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Nakuru | Alkaline | Flamingos, rhinos |
| Lake Bogoria | Alkaline | Hot springs, flamingos |
| Lake Baringo | Freshwater | Hippos, crocodiles, 470+ bird species |
| Lake Naivasha | Freshwater | Hippos, Crescent Island |
| Lake Elementaita | Alkaline | UNESCO, flamingos, pelicans |
| Lake Magadi | Alkaline | Soda mining, hot springs, flamingos |
| Lake Turkana | Alkaline | Jade Sea, crocodiles, Cradle of Humankind |
Viewpoints
The most famous viewpoint is the Rift Valley Viewpoint on the old Nairobi–Naivasha road (A104) — here you can see the entire valley with the rising steam plumes of the geothermal power plants. A second stop is worthwhile at the Mai Mahiu Escarpment on the way to the Masai Mara.
