Arrival & Transfers
Flights to the Maldives
All international flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé Island, directly next to the capital Malé. The airport is on its own island and is connected to Hulhumalé by a bridge. Coordinates: [4.1918, 73.5290].

Tipp
Emirates and Qatar Airways often offer "stopover" packages: 1–2 nights in Dubai or Doha including hotel for a small surcharge. Perfect for breaking up the journey and visiting a second city.
Achtung
Many resorts on remote atolls require a seaplane transfer, which only flies during daylight (6:00–16:00). If your flight lands in Malé after 3:00 PM, you will need to spend a night in Hulhumalé or Malé — plan for this!
Seaplane, Speedboat & Domestic Flights
The airport in Malé is just the beginning — the real challenge is the transfer to your island. Depending on the location, there are three options:
Speedboat Transfer
For islands in the North and South Malé Atoll (up to approx. 80 km from the airport). Fast, direct, weather-independent.
- Duration: 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on the island
- Price: $25–150 per person (one way), often cheaper for local islands than for resorts
- Advantage: Operate at night, no daylight restriction
- Examples: Maafushi (35 min., $25–30), Kurumba (10 min., included in hotel price), Bandos (20 min.)
Seaplane
The iconic Maldives experience — Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) operates the world's largest seaplane fleet: over 50 DHC-6 Twin Otters in red and white livery. The flight over the atolls is spectacular — turquoise lagoons, ring-shaped reefs, tiny islands from a bird's eye view.
- Range: Islands 100–250 km from the airport (Baa Atoll, Ari Atoll, Dhaalu Atoll, etc.)
- Price: $300–600 per person (round trip), organized by the resort
- Duration: 20–60 minutes flight time
- Restriction: Only during daylight (approx. 6:00–16:00), weather-dependent
- Luggage: Max. 20–25 kg plus 5 kg hand luggage — strictly enforced!
Domestic Flight + Speedboat
For the southernmost atolls (Addu, Laamu, Gaafu). Flight with Maldivian Airlines or Flyme to a domestic airport, from there speedboat to the island.
- Domestic Airports: Gan (Addu Atoll), Kadhdhoo (Laamu), Kooddoo (Gaafu), Dharavandhoo (Baa), Ifuru (Raa)
- Flight Price: $150–300 per person (one way)
- Advantage: Cheaper than seaplane for distant atolls, also flies after dark
Transfer Overview by Atoll
| Atoll | Transfer | Duration from Malé | Approx. Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Malé | Speedboat | 15–45 min. | $30–100 |
| South Malé | Speedboat | 30–90 min. | $40–120 |
| Ari Atoll | Seaplane / Domestic Flight | 25–40 min. | $250–500 |
| Baa Atoll | Seaplane / Domestic Flight | 30–45 min. | $300–500 |
| Raa/Lhaviyani | Seaplane | 35–50 min. | $350–550 |
| Addu Atoll | Domestic Flight | 70 min. | $200–350 |
Tipp
When flying by seaplane, be sure to sit on the left side (pilot's side) — the view of the atolls is breathtaking and provides the best photos. Don't forget sunglasses, the reflection on the water is bright.
Achtung
Seaplane transfers do not have fixed departure times! You will receive a time window at the airport (e.g., 10:00–14:00) and must stay in the waiting area until your flight is called. Plan for at least 2–3 hours of waiting time. Food and drinks in the TMA lounge are included.
The Seaplane Experience in Detail
A flight with a TMA seaplane is one of the most unforgettable experiences of a Maldives trip — and at the same time the most stressful part of the logistics. Here's how it works:
Step-by-Step
- Arrival at the Airport (MLE): After immigration, you go to the TMA counter in the terminal. There you show your resort booking and receive an approximate time window (e.g., "between 10:00 and 14:00").
- TMA Lounge: You are taken by shuttle to the TMA lounge, which is located on a platform on the water. Here you wait — with complimentary breakfast, snacks, and drinks. The lounges of premium resorts (Soneva, One&Only) have their own VIP areas with champagne.
- Boarding: Your name is called over the loudspeaker. You walk over a jetty to the DHC-6 Twin Otter — a propeller-driven seaplane with 15–19 seats. The aircraft floats on pontoons at the dock.
- Takeoff: The plane taxis on the lagoon like a speedboat, accelerates, and takes off after 200–300 meters. The takeoff is loud, bumpy, and exciting.
- Flight: At 300–500 meters altitude, you fly over the atolls — a panorama that no photo can do justice. Ring-shaped reefs, turquoise lagoons, tiny islands with individual resorts, whale sharks as dark shadows below the surface.
- Landing: The plane lands on the lagoon in front of your resort island — spray on the windows, gentle braking. A Dhoni takes you the last 100 meters to the jetty, where the resort staff awaits with coconut water and towels.
Seaplane FAQ
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How loud is it? | Very loud — earplugs are distributed, but noise-canceling headphones are better |
| Can I choose the seat? | No — but kindly ask for the left side (better view). Pilots are often cooperative |
| Luggage limit? | 20–25 kg checked luggage + 5 kg hand luggage. Strictly controlled! |
| What about overweight? | Excess baggage: $5 per kg. Or store at the airport ($5/day) |
| Do they fly in the rain? | Light rain: yes. Thunderstorms/heavy rain: delay or reschedule to the next day |
| What about night arrivals? | Seaplanes only fly during daylight (6:00–16:00). For late flights: overnight stay in Hulhumalé needed |
Public Ferries — The Budget Option
The MTCC ferry system (Maldives Transport and Contracting Company) connects most inhabited islands with Malé and with each other — for prices reminiscent of European bus tickets: $2–5 for routes that cost $25–40 by speedboat.
How It Works
- Departure: From Villingili Ferry Terminal in Malé (west harbor) or from the new Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal
- Schedule: 2–3 departures per week per route, NEVER on Fridays (Islamic rest day)
- Ticket: Buy at the terminal (cash in MVR) or upon boarding on the boat
- Duration: 1.5–4 hours depending on the route — the ferries are slow multipurpose boats, not speedboats
- Comfort: Simple but functional. Covered seating, no air conditioning. Sun deck with ocean view
The Main Ferry Routes from Malé
| Destination | Atoll | Duration | Price (MVR) | Price ($) | Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thulusdhoo | North Malé | 1 h 15 min | 22 | 1.40 | Sun, Tue, Thu |
| Maafushi | South Malé | 1 h 30 min | 22 | 1.40 | Sun, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat |
| Guraidhoo | South Malé | 2 h 30 min | 32 | 2.00 | Sun, Tue, Thu |

| Felidhoo | Vaavu | 4 h | 48 | 3.00 | Sun, Thu |
| Dhigurah | South Ari | No direct ferry service | — | Speedboat $35–40 | — |
Tip: The ferry to Maafushi (departure Malé 15:00, arrival 16:30) is one of the most popular routes — it can get crowded on weekends. Be there early! The return trip from Maafushi starts at 7:30 AM.
Tipp
The public ferry is the most authentic way to travel between the Maldives — you sit next to locals transporting fish and coconuts, families going to weddings, and students returning to their islands. The experience is priceless — the cost is laughable.
At the airport: Step-by-step
The Velana International Airport (MLE) is small but efficiently organized. Here is the complete process from landing to transfer:
After Landing
- Immigration (10–30 min.): Present passport, Traveler Declaration (digital) is checked, visa is stamped in the passport. Fingerprints are taken.
- Baggage Claim (10–20 min.): Collect baggage. The belts are small — waiting times possible.
- Customs: Baggage is scanned. Alcohol is confiscated and stored in a warehouse (returned upon departure, keep the receipt!). Pork products and religious figures are retained.
- Buy SIM Card (5 min.): Dhiraagu and Ooredoo counters directly in the arrivals hall. Show passport, insert SIM, done.
- Transfer: Depending on destination:
- Resort Guests: Resort representatives wait with name signs at the exit and take you to the speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight check-in
- Hulhumalé: Taxi directly in front of the terminal (30–50 MVR, 5 min.)
- Malé: Taxi over the Sinamalé Bridge (100–150 MVR, 15 min.) or ferry (10 MVR, 10 min.)
- Local Islands: Speedboat terminal at the airport or first to Malé/Hulhumalé and continue the next day
