Maafushi is the most visited local island in the Maldives and the epicenter of budget tourism. The small island in the South Malé Atoll (only 1.2 km long and 260 m wide) has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a bustling tourist center — with over 80 guesthouses, dozens of restaurants, dive schools, and tour providers. Bikini Beach

As an Islamic country, the Maldives has strict dress codes — on local islands, you can only wear Western swimwear at the designated "Bikini Beach". In Maafushi, the Bikini Beach is the northern beach section — separated by a fence from the "local beach," where locals swim fully clothed. The Bikini Beach is clean, has turquoise water and sun loungers, and guesthouses often provide towels and drinks directly there.

Thulusdhoo is an open secret among surfers: The small island in the North Malé Atoll hosts two world-class surf breaks right on its doorstep — and at a fraction of the cost a surf resort would charge.

The Breaks

• Cokes (Coca-Cola Break): Named after the old Coca-Cola factory on the island, this is a perfect right over the reef that breaks in immaculate form with southwest swell (March–October). For intermediate to advanced surfers. The wave runs 50–100 meters over the shallow reef bottom — booties recommended! Accessible via a 5-minute paddle or Dhoni from the beach. • Chickens: Right next to Cokes, a long left that breaks more gently and is also suitable for advanced beginners. With large swell, the wave can be over 200 meters long.

Best Surf Time: March to October (southwest monsoon), with the biggest swells in June/July. In the dry season (November–February), the waves are smaller and less frequent, but ideal for beginners.

Life on Thulusdhoo

The island has about 1,500 inhabitants and maintains an authentic character despite increasing tourism. There are around 20 guesthouses ($30–80/night), several surf shops with board rentals ($15–20/day), and the local Coca-Cola factory — the only one in the Maldives — still produces for the local market.

Besides surfing, Thulusdhoo offers excellent snorkeling at the island's house reef and the opportunity to observe traditional lacquerware making (Liyelaa Laajehun) — an almost extinct art form where wooden vessels are painted in bright colors. The island is also only 30 minutes by speedboat ($20–25) from the airport.

Dhigurah is a narrow, 3 km long strip of white sand in the South Ari Atoll — and the best address in the world for budget whale shark encounters. While the surrounding resorts charge $150 per tour, whale shark excursions from Dhigurah cost only $60–80 — and the sighting rate is identical because everyone goes to the same reef.

Whale Shark Tours

Every morning around 8:00 am, the Dhonis depart from the harbor and travel 15–30 minutes to the edge of the South Ari Marine Protected Area. The crew looks out for the dark shadows beneath the surface, and once a whale shark is spotted, a maximum of 10 snorkelers gently slide into the water. The animals are accustomed to humans and swim leisurely onward — you drift alongside a giant up to 10 meters long, covered in white spots, through crystal-clear water. The tour lasts 3–4 hours and includes 2–3 whale shark encounters as well as snorkeling stops at the reef.

More Than Whale Sharks

Dhigurah has a 3 km long beach, which is among the most beautiful beaches in the Maldives — and you have it almost to yourself. At Bikini Beach in the south of the island, there are rarely more than 10 people. In the evenings, small blacktip reef sharks regularly come to the shore (no danger, but spectacular), and with luck, you might see bioluminescence — the water glows neon blue when moved.

Fulidhoo in the Vaavu Atoll answers the question: "What did the Maldives look like before tourism?" This tiny island (only 600 inhabitants) has so far slept through mass tourism — and that's exactly what makes it the perfect destination for travelers who find Maafushi too touristy.

Fulidhoo's Bikini Beach is a dream: wide, white sand, turquoise water, and on an average day, you share it with maybe five other tourists. In the afternoon, manta rays regularly glide through the lagoon — visible from the beach! The underwater world right at the house reef is excellent: turtles, clownfish, parrotfish, and with a bit of luck, nurse sharks on the sandy bottom.

The island has only 5–6 guesthouses ($25–60/night), 2 small restaurants, and not a single souvenir shop. Village life is visible and accessible: children play on the dusty main street, fishermen mend their nets, and in the only café (Hotaa), men sit having tea and discussing. This unadulterated authentic experience has long been lost on Maafushi.

Guraidhoo in the South Malé Atoll is only 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport and offers an attractive mix of accessibility and authenticity. The island has about 2,000 inhabitants, around 15 guesthouses, and one of the best surf breaks in the region right off the coast.

• Greetings: "Assalaamu alaikum" (Peace be upon you) is the universal greeting. Smiles and nods are always reciprocated.
