Coral Reefs & Marine Life
The Maldives consist of 26 natural atolls—ring-shaped coral reefs growing on the ridge of an underwater mountain range. Each atoll encloses a shallow lagoon, interrupted by channels (Kandu), through which nutrient-rich deep water flows in and out. This channel system is the key to extraordinary biodiversity: The current brings plankton, which in turn drives the entire food chain from corals to fish to whale sharks.

Whale Sharks — The Gentle Giants
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish in the world—specimens over 12 meters long and weighing 20 tons have been documented. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are completely harmless: They feed exclusively on plankton, fish eggs, and small fish, which they filter through their huge mouths.

The South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) is home to one of the few resident whale shark populations in the world. Unlike other whale shark hotspots (Ningaloo Reef, Isla Holbox), where the animals appear seasonally, whale sharks can be found year-round at the South Ari Atoll. Scientists from the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) have identified over 500 individual whale sharks based on their unique spot patterns.

- Never touch—the slime layer of the skin is vital
- Do not swim directly in front of the animal—position yourself to the side or diagonally behind

Manta Rays — Dancers of the Oceans
Two types of manta rays inhabit the waters of the Maldives: the reef manta (Mobula alfredi) with up to 5 meters wingspan and the rare oceanic manta (Mobula birostris) with up to 7 meters—the latter being among the largest rays in the world.
Manta Behavior
Mantas are highly intelligent animals—they have the largest brain of any fish and recognize themselves in mirrors (a skill otherwise only seen in great apes, dolphins, and elephants). In the Maldives, they exhibit three characteristic behaviors:
- Feeding: They swim with wide-open mouths through plankton-rich water, often in elegant loops and spirals. In Hanifaru Bay, hundreds feed simultaneously—a spectacle known as the "manta tornado"
- Cleaning Stations: At certain reefs, mantas remain still while small cleaner fish remove parasites from their skin. Here, they can be observed up close for minutes
- Mating: Several males pursue a female in a spectacular "manta chain" over the reef

Sea Turtles
Five of the world's seven sea turtle species occur in the Maldives, two of them regularly:
Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
The most common species in the Maldives. Recognizable by its pointed beak and tortoiseshell-patterned shell. It primarily feeds on sponges and is regularly seen while snorkeling—on some resort islands at almost every reef. Critically endangered (IUCN Red List).
Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Larger than the hawksbill turtle (shell up to 1.5 m), recognizable by its rounded head. It mainly feeds on seagrass. Nests on the beaches of remote atolls. Endangered (IUCN Red List).
Nesting Season and Protection
The nesting season extends throughout the year, with a peak between January and May. Females come ashore at night, dig a deep hole, and lay 80–150 eggs. After 55–60 days, the hatchlings emerge and waddle to the sea. Many resorts run turtle conservation programs:

Tipp
When snorkeling with turtles: Do not chase or touch them. Stay calm in the water, and the animals often come closer on their own. Some hawksbill turtles are so accustomed to snorkelers that they continue feeding less than a meter away.
Sharks of the Maldives
The Maldives are among the best shark destinations in the world—and simultaneously among the safest. There is not a single documented fatal shark attack in the history of Maldivian tourism. The reef sharks are shy and flee when divers get too close.

In 2010, the Maldives declared their entire maritime area a shark sanctuary—one of the largest in the world (over 90,000 km²). Catching, killing, and selling sharks is prohibited. This measure has significantly recovered shark populations and makes the Maldives one of the best places worldwide for shark encounters.
Bioluminescence — The Sea Glow★★★
One of the most magical natural phenomena of the Maldives: On some beaches, the water glows at night in an otherworldly neon blue. Every wave, every step in the water, every stone thrown into the sea creates a glow—as if the ocean is glowing from within.
What Causes the Glow?
Responsible are tiny dinoflagellates (Noctiluca scintillans)—single-celled marine organisms that emit blue light through a chemical reaction (luciferin-luciferase reaction) when mechanically disturbed (wave motion, touch). The same chemistry is used by fireflies on land. In high concentration, they transform the entire surf into a pulsating light show.
Where and When to See Bioluminescence?
- Vaadhoo (Raa Atoll): The most famous bioluminescence beach in the world—this is where the viral photos of the "Sea of Stars" were taken. The island is small and hard to access, but some resorts in the Raa Atoll offer excursions
- Rangali (South Ari Atoll): Regular bioluminescence, accessible via the Conrad Maldives Resort
- Dhigurah (South Ari Atoll): Often visible on the long beach of the local island—and free!
- Fulhadhoo (Baa Atoll): Remote local island with frequent sea glow
- Mudhdhoo (Baa Atoll): Near Soneva Fushi, regular sightings
Tips for Observation
- Moonless nights (new moon) are best—moonlight outshines the delicate glow
- The intensity varies—sometimes breathtaking, sometimes barely visible. It depends on the plankton concentration, which in turn is influenced by currents and water temperature
- June to February are the best months, with a peak during the Southwest Monsoon (June–October), when nutrient-rich water boosts plankton production
- No flash when photographing—long exposure with a tripod (ISO 3200+, 15–30 sec., open aperture) yields the best results
- Best after 10:00 PM, when all lights are out
Achtung
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon and not guaranteed. No resort and no guide can promise that the beach will glow. The best chances are during the new moon in the monsoon season—but even then, it's a gamble. All the more overwhelming when it works.
Climate Change & Rising Sea Levels
The Maldives are the flattest country on Earth—on average only 1.5 meters above sea level, with the highest natural point at 2.4 meters. A sea level rise of just one meter would put 80% of the land underwater. This is not a hypothetical threat—it is the existential reality that 520,000 people live with.
The Maldives have become the global face of climate change. President Nasheed held the world's first underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 to demonstrate the urgency. The country has committed to becoming CO₂-neutral by 2030 and is investing in renewable energy, coastal protection, and the exploration of floating cities.
Visible Impacts
- Beach erosion: Many islands are losing beach width—sandbags and breakwaters are already visible on some islands. On some resort islands, sand must be replenished every few years to maintain the beaches
- Coral bleaching: Rising water temperatures lead to more frequent bleaching events, destroying entire reef sections. The major bleachings of 1998 (60% of corals affected) and 2016 (73% affected) have permanently changed the reefs
- Freshwater scarcity: The rising sea level infiltrates the freshwater lenses of the islands and salinizes the drinking water reserves. Many islands are already completely reliant on desalinated seawater
- Hulhumalé: The artificial island was explicitly built as a "climate refuge"—2 meters above sea level, higher than any natural island
- Weather extremes: Stronger monsoon storms, more unpredictable rainfall, and altered current patterns are becoming more frequent
Coral Bleaching & Coral Restoration
Coral bleaching is the most dramatic visible consequence of climate change in the Maldives. When the water temperature rises above 29–30 °C for several weeks, corals expel their symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae), which provide them with color and up to 90% of their energy. The corals turn white—"bleached"—and die within weeks if the temperature does not drop.

For travelers, this means: Enjoy the Maldives while they exist in this form—and travel as sustainably as possible. Choose resorts with sustainability programs, avoid single-use plastic, and offset your flight. The Maldives are both victims and beneficiaries of the global lifestyle—a contradiction that invites reflection.
Achtung
The Maldives are not a place for climate skeptics. If you tell a local that climate change is exaggerated, you will encounter incomprehension—for the Maldivians, it is an existential threat, not a political issue.
Sustainable Travel in the Maldives
The Maldives face a paradox: Tourism is the country's main source of income, but it also causes enormous environmental impacts—long-haul flights, water consumption, waste problems, coral stress. Here, as a traveler, you can make a difference:
Dos
- Use reef-safe sunscreen (without oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene)—many resorts ban other products
- Bring a reusable water bottle—many resorts offer free refills
- Choose resorts with sustainability programs (Soneva Fushi, Gili Lankanfushi, Six Senses Laamu are pioneers)
- Include local islands: Guesthouse tourism brings money directly to the locals
- CO₂ offset: The round trip from Germany generates approx. 3–4 tons of CO₂ per person
- Support coral programs: Adopt coral frames, participate in reef clean-ups
Don'ts
- Take nothing: Corals, shells, sand—everything is protected and export is prohibited
- Do not step on corals: Even dead corals are habitats and take decades to regrow
- Leave no trash: Especially on local islands, waste disposal is a problem
- Do not order shark fin soup: Not available in resorts, but still on the menu in some Asian restaurants in Malé
- No jet skiing over reefs: Noise and fuel harm the underwater world
Monsoon, Weather & Ocean Currents
The climate of the Maldives is determined by two monsoon seasons, which embed the entire year in tropical warm temperatures:
Northeast Monsoon (Iruvai) — November to April
The "dry" monsoon brings calm seas, blue skies, and excellent underwater visibility (30–40 meters). The humidity is slightly lower, and the days are long and sunny. This is the high season and the travel time recommended by most travel guides. December to February are the best months—but also the most expensive and crowded.
Southwest Monsoon (Hulhangu) — May to October
The "wet" monsoon brings more clouds, more frequent rain showers (often heavy but short—30–60 minutes, then sunshine), stronger waves, and occasional storms. However, the islands are greener, the cloud formations more dramatic, prices 30–50% lower, and the beaches emptier. For snorkelers, visibility is somewhat reduced (15–25 meters instead of 30+), but still excellent. Surfers prefer this season due to the constant southwest swell.
The great advantage of the monsoon: Between June and November, manta rays gather in Hanifaru Bay—the largest natural spectacle of the Maldives takes place precisely in the "bad" season!
Ocean Currents & Tides
The ocean currents are the invisible engine of the Maldivian ecosystem—and crucial for divers and snorkelers:
Current System
During the Northeast Monsoon, the main current flows from east to west through the atoll channels—nutrient-rich water from the depths is pushed into the atolls, bringing plankton that drives the entire food chain. During the Southwest Monsoon, the current reverses: west to east.
For divers, this means:
- In the dry season (Iruvai): The east side of the atolls offers the best visibility and most large fish life
- In the rainy season (Hulhangu): The west side is better protected and offers clearer water
- Channel currents can reach up to 3 knots—only for experienced drift divers
Tides
The Maldives have semi-diurnal tides—two high and two low tides per day, with a tidal range of 0.5–1 meter. For snorkelers, the incoming tide is the best time: The incoming water brings clear ocean water and often large fish into the atoll.
Flora & Fauna on Land
The land biodiversity of the Maldives is modest compared to the underwater world—but it has its own charm:
Plants
- Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera): The national symbol and the most economically important plant. Every island is lined with coconut palms that provide shade, building material, and whose fruits are used in almost every dish
- Screw Pine (Pandanus): Its leaves are woven into mats and baskets. The fruits look like large pineapples
- Breadfruit Tree (Artocarpus altilis): Important food source—the starchy fruits are grilled, cooked, or made into chips
- Banyan Fig (Ficus benghalensis): Huge, shade-giving trees in the villages, often a community meeting point
- Mangroves: On the protected coasts of some islands—important nursery for fish and natural coastal protection
Animals
- Flying Foxes (Pteropus giganteus): The most noticeable land animals—large bats with up to 1 meter wingspan, fluttering between the trees at dusk. On many islands in large colonies
- Geckos: Ubiquitous in every house and hotel—useful insect eaters
- Hermit Crabs: On the beach en masse after dark
- Herons & Terns: Gray and white herons on the beaches, sooty terns on the uninhabited islands
- Frigatebirds: With their distinctive forked tails and the red throat pouch of the males—they steal prey from other seabirds in flight
