Hiking in the Highlands
West Highland Way
Scotland's most famous long-distance hiking trail: 154 km from Milngavie (Glasgow) to Fort William in 6–8 days. Through the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, over the lonely Rannoch Moor, through Glencoe, and into the valley below Ben Nevis. The trail is well-marked and doable without mountaineering experience — but long and strenuous. Accommodations (B&Bs, hostels, bunkhouses) are along the route but must be booked in advance during high season.
Ben Nevis
The highest mountain in Britain (1,345 m) near Fort William. The Mountain Track (Tourist Route) is the standard path to the summit: 17 km, 1,350 meters of elevation gain, 7–9 hours round trip. No climbing required, but a serious mountain hike — the weather at the summit can be arctic even in summer (fog, snow, storm). The summit is in clouds 355 days a year — if you get the view, you're lucky.
Glenfinnan Viaduct
The 21-arch viaduct (1901), known as the setting for the "Hogwarts Express" in the Harry Potter films. The Jacobite Steam Train runs from April to October from Fort William to Mallaig over the viaduct — one of the most spectacular train routes in the world. Tickets (from £40 return) sell out weeks in advance. Alternatively: photograph the viaduct from the viewpoint at Loch Shiel when the steam train crosses (around 10:50 am and 3:00 pm).
North Coast 500
Scotland's answer to Route 66: 516 miles (830 km) around the northern Highlands, starting and ending in Inverness. Wild beaches (Durness, Balnakeil), dramatic cliffs (Duncansby Stacks), solitary mountains (Suilven, Stac Pollaidh), and hardly a soul in sight. Ideally in 5–7 days by car. The roads are partly single-track with Passing Places — that's part of the experience.
Achtung
The Highlands are serious mountain and wilderness areas. Even "simple" hikes can become dangerous with a change in weather. Always: weatherproof clothing, map and compass (not just GPS!), enough water and food, and let someone know where you're going. In the Highlands, there is no mobile reception in many areas.
