Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye (Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach) is Scotland's most famous island — and rightly so. On just 1,656 km², a surreal landscape is concentrated, looking as if designed by a fantasy director: rock spires piercing the mist, rugged mountains, dramatic cliffs, and light that changes by the minute.

Highlights

  • Old Man of Storr: The iconic 49 m high rock needle on the Trotternish Peninsula. The hike to the base of the rock formation takes 45–60 minutes (round trip) and offers views to the mainland on clear days. Arrive early to avoid the crowds.
  • Quiraing: A surreal ridge north of Staffin — rock spires, table mountains, and hidden plateaus. The hike (6.5 km, 2–3 hours, circular route) is one of the most spectacular in all of Scotland. Filming location for movies like "Prometheus" and "Macbeth".
  • Fairy Pools: A series of crystal-clear, turquoise natural pools at the foot of the Cuillin Mountains near Glenbrittle. In sunshine, it looks like the Caribbean (only 8°C water temperature). Easy hike (2.4 km), can get very crowded in summer.
  • Talisker Distillery: The only whisky distillery on Skye, on the shores of Loch Harport. Talisker is a strong, smoky single malt with a hint of sea air. Tour from £15, including tasting.
  • Dunvegan Castle: Seat of the MacLeod clan for 800 years — the longest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. Beautiful gardens and boat tours to a seal colony. Admission: £16.
  • Neist Point Lighthouse: At the westernmost point of Skye, with views of the Outer Hebrides. The island's best sunset spot. Steep descent to the lighthouse (30 min.).

💡 Tipp

Skye has been threatened by overtourism for several years — especially the Fairy Pools and the Old Man of Storr are overcrowded in summer. Visit the highlights early in the morning (before 9 am) or late in the afternoon. September is ideal: fewer tourists, no midges, beautiful autumn light.
