Mediterranean Coast — from the Costa Brava to Cabo de Gata

Spain's Mediterranean coast stretches for almost 2,000 kilometers — from the French border to Gibraltar. The coastal sections have melodious names and differ significantly.

The Coasts at a Glance

  • Costa Brava (Catalonia): "Wild Coast" — rugged rocky bays, pine forests, turquoise water. The most beautiful coves (Calas) are between Tossa de Mar and Cadaqués. Dalí lived in Cadaqués and Port Lligat — you immediately understand why
  • Costa Dorada (Catalonia): Flatter coast with long sandy beaches south of Barcelona. Family-friendly, with the Roman Tarragona as a cultural highlight
  • Costa del Azahar (Valencia): "Orange Blossom Coast" — endless orange groves meet wide sandy beaches. Peñíscola with its castle on the rock is a gem
  • Costa Blanca (Alicante): The warmest region of the Spanish mainland. Benidorm's skyscraper skyline contrasts with the quiet coves around Jávea and Dénia. The hinterland (Vall de Guadalest) is mountainous and spectacular
  • Costa Cálida (Murcia): The Mar Menor — Europe's largest saltwater lagoon — offers mirror-smooth, shallow water, ideal for families
  • Costa de Almería: The driest region in Europe meets the Mediterranean. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is a protected area of wild, undeveloped beauty — volcanic cliffs, lonely beaches, crystal-clear water. Spaghetti Westerns were filmed here
  • Costa del Sol (Málaga): The sunniest coast (320 sunny days/year). Between the high-rise hotels of Torremolinos and Fuengirola lie gems like Nerja (Balcony of Europe) and the white mountain villages of the hinterland
  • Costa de la Luz (Cádiz/Huelva): Already on the Atlantic — endless, golden sandy beaches, strong wind (kite surfer paradise Tarifa), less developed than the Mediterranean coast. Bolonia with its Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia and the huge moving dune is a dream

💡 Tipp

The most beautiful beaches are away from the major resorts. Cabo de Gata, the coves of the Costa Brava (accessible only on foot!), and the beaches of the Costa de la Luz are light-years away from the high-rise hotels of the Costa del Sol.
