What is better: hotel, vacation apartment, or hostel?

The choice depends on your travel style and budget. Hotels offer the highest comfort with daily cleaning, breakfast, and concierge service — ideal for short trips and business travel. Vacation apartments are particularly worthwhile for families and longer stays, as you have your own kitchen and enjoy more space. Hostels are the cheapest option and perfect for solo travelers and backpackers who want to meet other travelers. Boutique hotels are often suitable for couples, while groups can save the most with a vacation apartment.

How do I find the cheapest accommodation?

Always compare multiple booking portals, as prices for the same room can vary by up to 30%. Book outside of peak season and check if a direct booking with the hotel is cheaper — many hotels offer the best price when booked directly through their website. Be flexible with the location: accommodations slightly outside the center are often significantly cheaper while still having good transport links. Use price alerts and also look for weekly or monthly discounts for longer stays. Our accommodation search compares offers from various providers for you.

What do hotel stars really mean?

Hotel stars are a classification system that describes the amenities and level of service of a hotel. In Germany, DEHOGA awards stars from 1 (basic) to 5 (luxury). For example, a 3-star hotel offers a private bathroom, TV, daily cleaning, and breakfast options. It's important to know that the star rating is not internationally uniform — a 4-star hotel in Egypt does not necessarily correspond to a 4-star hotel in Germany. Therefore, also pay attention to guest reviews, which are often more informative than the star rating alone.

When should I book a hotel?

For popular travel destinations in peak season (e.g., Mallorca in summer or ski resorts in winter), it is advisable to book 3–6 months in advance. For city trips, 4–6 weeks is often sufficient, unless major events such as trade fairs or festivals are taking place. Last-minute bookings can be very cheap for business hotels on weekends, as these rooms would otherwise remain empty. Always pay attention to the cancellation policies when booking — flexible rates sometimes cost just a few euros more and give you planning security.

What is the difference between a vacation home and a vacation apartment?

A vacation home is a standalone building that you have completely to yourself — with a private garden, often a terrace, and more privacy. A vacation apartment is part of a larger building, similar to a rental apartment, and shares entrance areas or outdoor spaces with other tenants. Vacation homes are generally more spacious and better suited for groups or families with children, but they also cost more. Vacation apartments offer good value for money, especially in cities and popular beach resorts.

What should I pay attention to when booking a vacation apartment?

Read the reviews of previous guests thoroughly — pay special attention to recurring issues such as noise, cleanliness, or misleading photos. Check the exact location on the map and the distance to the beach, shopping options, and public transport. Clarify before booking whether final cleaning, bed linen, towels, and tourist tax are included in the price or cost extra. Ask about the security deposit and cancellation policies. Reputable landlords respond quickly and thoroughly to inquiries — this is a good sign for a smooth stay.

Is all-inclusive really worth it?

All-inclusive is especially worthwhile in countries with high restaurant prices (e.g., Greece, Turkey, or the Caribbean) and for families with children who constantly need snacks and drinks. You have full cost control and no unpleasant surprises at the end of the vacation. However, you often miss out on local cuisine and the authentic atmosphere of small restaurants. Calculate before booking what meals and drinks would cost outside — for a two-week vacation, all-inclusive can save several hundred euros per person.
