De Pijp

De Pijp (the pipe) is Amsterdam's most multicultural and vibrant neighborhood. What was once a densely built working-class area is now a melting pot of cultures, cuisines, and lifestyles. Here, students, young families, artists, and immigrants from all over the world live side by side — and that's exactly what gives it its charm.

Highlights

  • Albert Cuyp Market: Amsterdam's largest and most famous street market (since 1905). Over 260 stalls on a street more than a kilometer long: cheese, herring, fabrics, clothing, electronics, and above all street food from around the world — Surinamese roti, Turkish pizza, kibbeling (fried fish), fresh stroopwafels. Monday to Saturday, 9 am–5 pm. Free.
  • Heineken Experience: The former brewery (1867–1988) on Stadhouderskade is now an interactive museum. Tour through the brewing process, tasting, and a beer with a view of the canal. Admission: €23 (cheaper online).
  • Sarphatipark: De Pijp's small, green oasis — a pretty park with fountains and benches. Perfect for a picnic after visiting Albert Cuyp.
  • Food & Drink: De Pijp has the highest restaurant density in Amsterdam. Surinamese (Spang Makandra), Indonesian, Ethiopian, Mexican — here you can eat your way around the world. Gerard Doustraat and Frans Halsstraat are the main gastronomic axes.
