Darling Harbour★★
Darling Harbour is Sydney's family-friendly entertainment district — a large harbor promenade west of the CBD with museums, an aquarium, restaurants, and a spectacular fireworks display every Saturday evening (free, 8:30 pm). After a comprehensive renovation (Darling Square), the district is more modern and vibrant than ever.
The top attractions:
- SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium: Over 13,000 marine creatures, including sharks, rays, turtles, and an impressive Great Barrier Reef tank. Admission 46 AUD (cheaper online). Especially for families with children.
- Australian National Maritime Museum: Free admission to the main galleries. Outside, historical ships are available for viewing, including a Royal Australian Navy submarine (boarding ticket 32 AUD).
- WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo: Right next to the aquarium. Compact zoo with koalas (photo experience from 30 AUD), kangaroos, and wombats. Ideal for a quick animal encounter, but does not replace a visit in the wild.
- Chinese Garden of Friendship: A surprisingly peaceful Chinese garden in the midst of the hustle and bustle. Teahouse overlooking lotus blossoms. Admission 6 AUD — an oasis of tranquility.
Around the harbor, restaurants line up — many are touristy and overpriced. Better options: The Malaya (39 Lime Street, King Street Wharf, Malaysian cuisine, Mains 30–42 AUD) or Cafe del Mar at Cockle Bay for cocktails with a view.
💡 Tipp
The Saturday fireworks at 8:30 pm are free and worth it — secure a spot on the promenade 30 minutes beforehand. For families: The SEA LIFE + WILD LIFE combo ticket saves about 30% compared to individual tickets.
