Discovering Rio
Rio de Janeiro is not just any city. It is a place where dramatic nature and a megacity merge in close quarters: Granite rocks rise directly from the sea of houses, tropical rainforest grows between skyscrapers, and the Atlantic Ocean peeks through at every corner. The "Cidade Maravilhosa" (Marvelous City) has 6.7 million inhabitants (13 million in the metropolitan area) and is the emotional heart of Brazil.
Rio deserves at least 4–5 days: Cristo Redentor and Sugarloaf Mountain are must-sees, but the true soul of the city lies in its neighborhoods — the bohemian Santa Teresa, the vibrant Lapa, the elegant Ipanema, and the chaotically charming Centro. Add to that a Carnival like no other and a beach culture elevated to a lifestyle.
Orientation
Rio stretches along the coast and is traversed by mountains. The main districts for travelers:
- Copacabana: The most famous beach section in the world, 4 km long. Tourist infrastructure, hotels of all price ranges, lively nightlife. Well connected by metro.
- Ipanema & Leblon: More elegant and hip than Copacabana. Better restaurants, chic boutiques, beautiful beach (Posto 9 is the meeting point). Brazil's most expensive residential area.
- Centro: The historical and business center. Colonial churches, museums, the futuristic library. Lively during the day, deserted in the evening — then switch to Lapa.
- Lapa: Rio's nightlife epicenter. The famous arches (Arcos da Lapa), samba clubs, bars, and the Escadaria Selarón staircase. The district explodes on Friday and Saturday nights.
- Santa Teresa: The bohemian artist district on the hill above Lapa. Cobblestones, studios, boutique pousadas, restaurants with views. Rio's most charming district.
- Botafogo & Urca: Between Copacabana and Centro. Urca is at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain — quiet, safe, local atmosphere. Botafogo has the best craft beer scene in Rio.
