Santa Teresa, Lapa & Nightlife

★★★ Santa Teresa

Rio's most charming district lies on a hill above the Centro and feels like a village in the middle of the megacity. Cobbled streets, decaying colonial houses next to lovingly restored villas, artist studios, small galleries, and pousadas with views of Guanabara Bay. The yellow Bondinho tram (historic tram, since 1877) rattles through the narrow streets — the ride alone is an experience.

Santa Teresa is the creative heart of Rio: Painters, musicians, and writers have lived here since the 19th century. The Parque das Ruínas — the ruin of a mansion, converted into a gallery — offers one of the best views over Rio. In the evening, sit in one of the small bars, listen to live samba, drink Caipirinha: this is the real Rio.

★★★ Lapa — Rio's Nightlife

When the sun goes down, Lapa comes to life. The district around the Arcos da Lapa (a colonial aqueduct from the 18th century) is Rio's nightlife epicenter — especially on Fridays and Saturdays when the streets turn into an open-air party.

  • Escadaria Selarón: The world-famous staircase that Chilean artist Jorge Selarón covered with over 2,000 tiles from around the world. 215 steps in a sea of colors — one of Rio's most photogenic spots. Visit during the day!
  • Samba Clubs: "Rio Scenarium" (three floors in an antique warehouse), "Carioca da Gema," and "Trapiche Gamboa" offer live samba, forró, and chorinho. Friday/Saturday from 21:00.
  • Street Party: On Friday nights, Rua do Lavradio transforms into a huge street market with music, food, and Caipirinha stands. Thousands of Cariocas celebrate until the early hours.

★★ Tijuca National Park

The largest urban rainforest in the world lies in the middle of Rio. 3,200 hectares of tropical forest with waterfalls, hiking trails, viewpoints, and a biodiversity you wouldn't expect in a metropolis. The path to Cristo Redentor leads right through it.

  • Pico da Tijuca: At 1,022 m, the highest point in Rio. Challenging hike (3–4h round trip), 360° panorama.
  • Cascatinha Taunay: Pretty waterfall, easily accessible.
  • Vista Chinesa: Chinese pavilion with postcard view over the South Zone and the Atlantic.

★★ Maracanã

The legendary football stadium — once the largest in the world (200,000 spectators at the 1950 World Cup final!) — now holds 78,000 spectators and is a pilgrimage site for football fans. Experiencing a Flamengo or Fluminense game live is unforgettable: the atmosphere, the chants, the pyrotechnics, the passion.

Av. Pres. Castelo Branco, Maracanã. Stadium tours daily 9:00–16:00 (50 BRL / 8€). Game tickets via the clubs' websites (Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco, Botafogo) — from 40 BRL (7€). Uber to the stadium, don't walk!

Achtung

Lapa can be confusing at night. Take only a little cash and no expensive phone. It's safer in a group. Use Uber/99 for the way there and back. Santa Teresa is beautiful during the day, but at night you should stay on the main streets.
