The Four Seasons

Spring (March–May): The Perfect Balance

Spring is Budapest's best travel time: Temperatures rise (15–25°C), the chestnut trees on Andrássy Avenue bloom, the terraces of the ruin bars open, and the Danube cruises begin. The city is not yet overcrowded, and prices are moderate. April and May are ideal — warm enough for outdoor thermal baths and walks on Margaret Island, cool enough for hours of sightseeing.

Summer (June–August): Hot and Lively

Budapest in summer is hot, lively, and full of festivals: the Sziget Festival (August, one of Europe's largest music festivals) on the Danube Island, open-air cinemas, Danube parties, and nights that never seem to end. Note: The heat (35°C+) makes daytime sightseeing exhausting — plan thermal baths for the morning (it's cool there!), sightseeing for early morning or evening, and the hot hours for air-conditioned museums.

Autumn (September–November): The Golden Season

Autumn is Budapest's insider tip: September is still warm (22°C), October is golden with foliage in the city park and on Gellért Hill, November is atmospheric and quiet. The grape harvest brings fresh wine must (Sturm) to the wine bars, and the Budapest Wine Festival (September) on Castle Hill is a highlight. Tourist numbers drop, as do prices.

Winter (December–February): Thermal Baths and Christmas Markets

Budapest in winter is magical: Christmas markets (Vörösmarty Square and Basilica are the most beautiful), steaming thermal baths in the snow, ice skating in the city park (the largest outdoor ice rink in Europe), and affordable prices. The cold (0 to –5°C, occasionally –15°C) is made bearable by the thermal culture: sitting in a 38°C pool in the morning while snowflakes fall — an experience that makes Budapest unique.

💡 Tipp

The absolute best travel time is April/May or September — pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists than in summer, and the most beautiful lighting conditions. However, Budapest in winter (thermal baths + Christmas markets) is an underrated highlight.
