International Flights
Costa Rica has two international airports:
San José — Juan Santamaría (SJO)
The main airport is located in Alajuela, about 20 km northwest of San José. No direct flights from Germany, but excellent connections via:
- Madrid (Iberia): About 14h total travel time. Often the cheapest option from Germany.
- Miami/Houston/Atlanta (American, United, Delta): About 14–16h total travel time with a transfer in the USA (ESTA required!).
- Amsterdam (KLM): Seasonal connections, about 13–14h.
- Panama City (Copa Airlines): A good hub for all of Central America.
Transfer: Official taxi to the city center about 15,000–20,000 CRC (25–35 USD, 30 min). Uber also works. Buses to San José for 1,500 CRC (2.50 USD) — but cumbersome with luggage.
Liberia — Daniel Oduber (LIR)
In the northwest, ideal for Guanacaste, Nicoya Peninsula, and Arenal. Fewer connections, but growing. Direct flights from Miami, Houston, Toronto. If your destination is on the Pacific coast, this airport saves hours of driving time.
Flight Prices (Reference from Germany)
| Period | Price (Round Trip) |
|---|---|
| Low Season (May–Nov) | 550–750€ |
| Shoulder Season (Nov–Dec) | 650–900€ |
| High Season (Dec–Apr) | 750–1,200€ |
💡 Tipp
If transferring in the USA (even just transit!), you need an ESTA — it costs 21 USD and must be applied for at least 72 hours before departure. Those who want to avoid USA transit fly via Madrid (Iberia) or Panama City (Copa). This saves ESTA stress and is often cheaper.
