Best Travel Time & Climate

The Dominican Republic has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. There are no classic seasons, but rather a dry season and a rainy season — with the exact distribution varying depending on the coast.

🟢 Best Travel Time: December – April (Dry Season)

The absolute peak season: Temperatures 25–30°C, little rain, low humidity. Perfect beach weather. January–March is also whale season in Samaná. Highest prices and full resorts (especially Christmas/New Year, Semana Santa/Easter).

🟡 Transition Months: May and November

Good value for money: Still/already good weather, but significantly cheaper prices. May can already bring occasional showers, November is the end of the hurricane season. Fewer tourists.

🔴 Rainy Season & Hurricane Season: June – October

The rainy season brings afternoon showers (often only 1–2 hours, then sun again), higher humidity (85%+), and the official hurricane season (June–November). The actual hurricane risk is statistically low — the last severe devastation was Hurricane Georges in 1998 and Maria in 2017 (more Puerto Rico). Nevertheless: travel insurance is mandatory!

Advantage of the rainy season: Prices drop by 30–50%, resorts are half empty, nature is at its greenest, waterfalls have the most water.

North Coast vs. South Coast

Important: The North Coast (Puerto Plata, Samaná) receives significantly more rain than the South Coast and has its own rainy season (November–January!). Punta Cana and the south are drier in winter.
