Overview of Regions

The Dominican Republic can be divided into five travel regions. Each has its own character:

🏖️ Punta Cana & the East

For whom: All-inclusive vacationers, couples, families, beach fans
The country's tourist stronghold: 50 kilometers of white sandy beach lined with coconut palms and gigantic all-inclusive resorts. Bavaro Beach and Cap Cana are among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Plus excursions to Isla Saona, zipline adventures, and the Mediterranean artist village Altos de Chavón.

🏛️ Santo Domingo

For whom: Culture lovers, history fans, night owls
The oldest European settlement in the New World: The Zona Colonial is a living museum with the first cathedral, the first university, and the first street in the Americas. Plus a vibrant metropolis with Malecón promenade, Merengue clubs, and the country's best gastronomy.

🐋 Samaná

For whom: Nature lovers, adventurers, individual travelers
The most spectacular peninsula in the Caribbean: tropical rainforest, the El Limón waterfall, the dream beaches Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón, the cosmopolitan Las Terrenas, and from January to March the humpback whales in the Bahía de Samaná. The "Bacardi Island" Cayo Levantado lies off the coast.

🏄 North Coast (Costa del Ámbar)

For whom: Surfers, kitesurfers, budget travelers, adventurers
Puerto Plata with its cable car and the San Felipe fortress, Cabarete as the kitesurfing capital of the world, the multicultural Sosúa, and the 27 Charcos de Damajagua — natural waterfall pools for jumping. Less luxury, more authenticity than the east.

🦎 Southwest (Jaragua & Barahona)

For whom: Explorers, off-road fans, nature purists
The least visited and wildest area: Bahía de las Águilas — the most beautiful and loneliest beach in the country. Lago Enriquillo with crocodiles and iguanas, the Larimar mines in the mountains, and the vast Jaragua National Park. This is where the real adventure begins.
