Lapad, Babin Kuk & Beaches

Dubrovnik does not have wide sandy beaches — the coast is characterized by cliffs, pebble coves, and rock platforms. The water is crystal clear, making swimming in the sheltered bays a delight. The main beaches:

Banje Beach

The number one city beach, directly east of the Old Town with views of the city walls and Lokrum Island. Pebble beach with turquoise water, beach club with loungers (from €25/day) and a bar. Busy and somewhat touristy during the day, but the location is unbeatable: swimming with a fortress wall panorama.

Lapad Beach (Uvala Lapad)

Dubrovnik's most family-friendly beach: a sheltered bay with fine pebbles, shallow entry, beach promenade with cafés and restaurants. Easily accessible by bus (line 6). Less photogenic than Banje, but more relaxed and affordable. Loungers €10–15/day.

Copacabana Beach (Babin Kuk)

At the tip of the Babin Kuk peninsula: a wide pebble beach with a beach bar, water slide, and jet ski rental. Popular with families and hotel guests. The view of the nearby Daksa Island and the Elaphite Islands is beautiful. Bus line 6.

Sveti Jakov Beach

The insider tip east of the Old Town: A small bay accessible via a steep staircase (about 150 steps). Crystal clear water, fewer tourists, and the best view of the Old Town from a distance. Restaurant on the beach. The steps are strenuous, but the reward is an almost private beach with a postcard panorama.

Bellevue Beach

A hidden cliff bay below Hotel Bellevue: steep stairs down, pebbles and rocks below, cliffs above. Spectacular, but little space. Not for families with small children, perfect for cliff divers and snorkelers.

Bay of Šulić

A rock bathing spot on the southwest side of the Lapad peninsula, only accessible via a path through the woods. Not a beach in the traditional sense, but flat rocks for sunbathing and ladders into the water. Few visitors — the most secluded bathing option near the city.

Šetalište kralja Zvonimira (Lapad Promenade)

The Lapad Promenade is Dubrovnik's relaxed alternative to the Stradun: a 1 km long, palm-lined boulevard along the Bay of Lapad, with cafés, ice cream parlors, restaurants, and views of the water. In the evenings, locals and hotel guests stroll here, the air smells of pine and grilled fish. The atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed than in the Old Town — and prices are 30–40% cheaper.

Restaurants in Lapad & Gruž

Dining outside the Old Town is Dubrovnik's best money-saving tip — and the quality is at least as good:

• Pantarul: Dubrovnik's best modern restaurant — creative Dalmatian cuisine with local ingredients. Pašticada (Dalmatian stew), grilled squid, homemade pasta. Main courses €12–22. Reservation recommended.
• Shizuku: Surprise in Lapad: excellent Japanese restaurant with fresh Adriatic fish as sashimi. Fusion of Dalmatia and Japan. €15–25.
• Konoba Dubrava: Traditional konoba with stone terrace: Grilled fish by weight (€40–60/kg), black risotto, Peka (meat or octopus cooked under an iron bell — pre-order 24h in advance!). €15–30.
• Gruž Market (Tržnica Gruž): Dubrovnik's largest market: fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, olive oil, and lavender. Most lively in the morning. This is where the Dubrovnik locals shop — not a tourist market.

Choosing accommodation is crucial in Dubrovnik — the city is compact, but the price differences between the Old Town and the outskirts are enormous.

In the Old Town

Advantage: Right in the middle, in the evening when the day tourists are gone, you have the Stradun almost to yourself. The Old Town is magical at night.
Disadvantage: Expensive (€150–400/night), many stairs (no elevator in old buildings!), noisy during the day, no parking.
For whom: Romantics, short trips, those with a budget.

Lapad & Babin Kuk

Advantage: Best value for money, beach within walking distance, promenade with restaurants, good bus connection (15 min. to the Old Town).
Disadvantage: Not directly in the Old Town — bus ride or 30 min. walk.
For whom: Families, longer stays, beach lovers.

Ploče (east of the Old Town)

Advantage: Close to the Old Town and Banje Beach, luxury hotels with sea views, cable car base station nearby.
Disadvantage: Expensive, steep hills.
For whom: Luxury travelers, couples.

Gruž

Advantage: Cheapest, market and supermarkets, ferry port for excursions.
Disadvantage: Least atmospheric.
For whom: Budget travelers, travelers with many excursions (Elaphites, Pelješac).
