Montañita & Ruta del Sol
Montañita is Ecuador's answer to Bali, Byron Bay, and Zipolite all in one: a small fishing village on the Pacific coast that has developed over the past decades into the most famous surfer and backpacker spot in South America. Here, perfect waves meet hippie culture, cheap cocktails, and legendary sunsets.
Surfing
Montañita's right point break wave is the reason why it all began here. The wave is consistent, long, and suitable for all levels — beginners to the left on the beach, pros at the tip. The best waves come from December to May (rainy season, bigger swell). Surfboard rental: 5–10 USD/hour. Surf lessons: from 25 USD (2 hours). Other good surf beaches nearby: Olón (quieter, family-friendly) and Ayampe (less known, strong waves).
The Montañita Experience
Montañita is more than surfing — it's a way of life. Lying on the beach during the day, yoga or surf lessons in the afternoon, cocktails at sunset in the evening, and dancing until the morning hours at night. The "Calle de los Cocktails" (Cocktail Alley) is the epicenter: Caipirinha, Mojito, and fresh fruit juices from 2 USD. Wednesdays and Saturdays feature the night market with handicrafts and street food.
Important: Montañita is a party place — those seeking peace should head to the neighboring Olón (5 km north, quieter beach, families) or Ayampe (30 km south, bohemian village, yoga retreats).
Ruta del Sol — Ecuador's Coastal Road
The Ruta del Sol (Sun Route) connects the coastal towns between Guayaquil and Esmeraldas and is ideal for a relaxed coastal road trip:
- Salinas — Ecuador's "Miami": high-rise hotels, jet skis, and the westernmost point of the South American mainland. Good for a day, not for a week.
- Montañita — Party, surfing, sunsets (see above).
- Olón — Quieter neighbor of Montañita with a long sandy beach and a church on the cliff.
- Ayampe — Small bohemian village, yoga retreats, organic restaurants, and empty beaches. Ecuador's best-kept secret.
- Puerto López — Starting point for whale watching and Isla de la Plata (see below).
- Los Frailes — Located in Machalilla National Park, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Ecuador: white sand, turquoise water, surrounded by dry forest. Entry: free (national park).
Transport: Buses connect all the places on the coast — for a few dollars. From Guayaquil to Montañita: 3 hours, 5 USD. From Montañita to Puerto López: 1 hour, 2 USD.
