The Four Seasons

Spring (March–May): Awakening

The days noticeably lengthen, crocuses bloom in the Princes Street Gardens, and Edinburgh awakens from winter. Temperatures: 5–14°C — still cool, but the sun appears more often. Few tourists, moderate prices, and the city belongs to the locals. Easter Week (Easter holidays) brings families, but overall, spring is a quiet, pleasant time.

Summer (June–August): Festival Season

Edinburgh's peak season — and for good reason. Long, bright days (light until 10 PM in June), temperatures around 15–19°C (warm by Scottish standards), and in August, the Edinburgh Festival: Fringe (art), International Festival (classical, opera), Book Festival, Film Festival, and the Military Tattoo at the Castle. The city is bursting at the seams — but the energy is infectious. Note: Hotels in August cost double to triple. Book early!

Autumn (September–October): Golden Edinburgh

The festivals are over, the tourist crowds thin out, and Edinburgh shows its golden side: autumn leaves in the Princes Street Gardens, dramatic light over the Castle, cozy pub evenings. Temperatures: 8–15°C, still pleasant for hiking on Arthur's Seat. September is one of the best months to visit: good weather, fewer tourists, fair prices.

Winter (November–February): Dramatic Darkness

Edinburgh in winter is gloomy, dramatic, and atmospheric. Short days (dark by 4 PM), cold (1–7°C), wind, and occasional snow — but the city shines: Edinburgh's Christmas (Christmas market on Princes Street, Ferris wheel with Castle view) and Hogmanay — Scotland's legendary New Year's celebration, one of the biggest and wildest in the world. Plus: hot pubs, whisky by the fireplace, and the Castle in the snow.

💡 Tipp

The best time for Edinburgh: Early September (post-festival calm, golden light, moderate prices) or August if you want to experience the Fringe (but book early!). For Hogmanay (New Year's Eve): Secure tickets months in advance — the street party on Princes Street is legendary.
