Overview of City Districts

Edinburgh is divided into two main parts, which couldn't be more different — and it's precisely this contrast that makes the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site:

Old Town

For whom: First-time visitors, history fans, Harry Potter pilgrims
The medieval Old Town on the volcanic ridge: the Royal Mile as its backbone, Edinburgh Castle as its crown, narrow alleys (closes), stacked houses up to 14 stories high, Greyfriars Kirkyard, and the dark history of Burke & Hare. Here, every corner is a photo opportunity, and every stone tells a story.

New Town

For whom: Shopping fans, architecture lovers, strollers
The Georgian New Town (built from 1767) is the elegant counterpart to the Old Town: straight streets, symmetrical facades, Princes Street (shopping street with Castle view), George Street (boutiques and cocktail bars), and Queen Street Gardens. Here, you stroll through 250 years of urban planning.

Leith

For whom: Foodies, harbor romantics, night owls
Edinburgh's port district north of the center was once rough and notorious — today it is the gastronomic heart of the city: Michelin-starred restaurants next to fish & chip shops, craft beer breweries next to historic pubs, the Royal Yacht Britannia, and a maritime flair that gives Edinburgh a completely different note.

Arthur's Seat & Holyrood

For whom: Nature lovers, hikers, photographers
The 251-meter-high extinct volcano and its surrounding Holyrood Park offer wilderness in the middle of the city: rocks, cliffs, lakes, and hiking trails with spectacular views. At its foot lies the Palace of Holyroodhouse — the official Scottish residence of the British monarchy.
