Why Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is a city that takes your breath away — even at first glance. The medieval Old Town perches on an extinct volcano, the Georgian New Town stretches elegantly beyond it, and above all, Edinburgh Castle rises like a legend carved in stone. It is a city that Shakespeare could have invented — had Shakespeare ever visited Scotland.

  • Edinburgh Castle — The iconic fortress on Castle Rock, a 340-million-year-old volcanic plug, dominates the skyline and has been inhabited for over 900 years. The castle houses the Scottish crown jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and the One O'Clock Gun — which booms over the city every day at 1 PM.
  • The Royal Mile — A mile of history, compressed into a single street: from the Castle at the top to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom. Cobblestones, winding alleys (closes), hidden courtyards, the city's best street art, and more history per square meter than almost any other street in the world.
  • Whisky — Scotland is the homeland of whisky, and Edinburgh its gateway. From the Scotch Whisky Experience on the Royal Mile to Cadenhead's Whisky Bar to the distilleries in the Highlands — here you'll learn why single malt is more than a drink: it's a philosophy.
  • Harry Potter — J.K. Rowling wrote large parts of the Harry Potter novels in Edinburgh's cafes. The Elephant House, Greyfriars Kirkyard (where the names Voldemort, McGonagall, and Tom Riddle are found on gravestones), George Heriot's School (the model for Hogwarts), and Victoria Street (the inspiration for Diagon Alley) — Edinburgh IS Hogwarts.
  • Festival Fringe — In August, Edinburgh transforms into the world capital of art: The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world — over 3,000 shows, 300 venues, 25 days. Comedy, theater, music, dance, street art — the whole city becomes a stage.
  • Arthur's Seat — A 251-meter-high extinct volcano rising in the middle of the city. The hike to the summit takes 45 minutes and rewards with a 360-degree panorama over the city, the Firth of Forth, and the Highlands on the horizon. A volcano as a city park — where else can you find that?
  • Scottish Cuisine — Much more than haggis (though you must try haggis): Scottish beef, fresh salmon from the Highlands, Cullen Skink (creamy fish soup), shortbread, and Cranachan (raspberries with cream and whisky). Edinburgh has one of the most exciting gastro scenes in the UK.
  • Architecture — Edinburgh is a double UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Old Town (medieval, dramatic, vertical) and the New Town (Georgian, elegant, horizontal) form a unique architectural contrast. Plus: spectacular Victorian buildings, Gothic churches, and modern masterpieces like the Scottish Parliament.

Edinburgh is the perfect blend of history and modernity, of dark drama and vibrant culture. Small enough for a weekend, rich enough for a week — and in August, when the festivals take over the city, the most exciting city in the world.
