Health & Safety
Health
Finland has an excellent healthcare system. No special vaccinations required — standard vaccinations (tetanus, diphtheria, polio) should be up to date. Bring EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) for treatments in public health centers. Nevertheless: A travel health insurance is recommended, especially for activities like dog sledding tours or winter hikes.
Drinking Water
Finnish tap water is excellent — it is among the cleanest in the world. Drinkable everywhere, even in small towns. In the wilderness, spring water and stream water are generally drinkable, but for safety: prefer flowing water, filter standing water.
Mosquitoes
The biggest "health risk" in Finland are mosquitoes (hyttyset) and blackflies (mäkärät). From mid-June to early August, they can be extremely aggressive in Lapland and the lake district. Mosquito repellent with DEET (30%+), long-sleeved clothing, and a head net are mandatory in summer. In cities and on windy coasts: no problem.
Ticks
In southern and central Finland, there are ticks (punkki) that can transmit TBE and Lyme disease. TBE vaccination is recommended if you spend a lot of time in nature (especially the archipelago coast and Åland). Check your body after forest walks.
Safety
Finland is one of the safest countries in the world. Violent crime against tourists: practically zero. Pickpocketing: extremely rare, even in Helsinki. The police are trustworthy and helpful. Emergency number: 112 (works for police, fire, and ambulance).
| Risk | Rating | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Crime | Very low | Normal big city caution in Helsinki |
| Road traffic | Low | In winter: black ice and wildlife (moose!) |
| Natural hazards | Medium | Cold in Lapland, drowning in lakes (currents) |
| Wild animals | Low | Bears, wolves, moose — avoid, do not feed |
Achtung
In winter in Lapland: Risk of frostbite at -25°C and colder! Never go outside without appropriate winter clothing (thermal underwear, down jacket, wind protection, insulated boots, gloves, hat). Keep electronics (smartphone, camera) warm — batteries fail in extreme cold within minutes.
